Description

w. P. ELA M.
Top-Props for Carriages.
No. 145,935, 'Paten-ted Dec.30,1873.
lll
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLOUGHBY P. ELAM, OF PETERSBURG, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT To J. H. WILOOX, 0E sAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN TOP-PROPS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,935, dated December 30, 1873; application filed November 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LWILLOUGHBY P. ELAM, of the town of Petersburg, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rests or Supports for the Bows of Buggy-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as -will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in supports or rests for the bows of buggy-tops; and it consists in a revolving support or rest placed upon the pin or projection to which the lower end of the jointed brace is pivoted, and which is connected to the brace in such a manner as to move with it, assuming a horizontal or vertical position as the top is lowered or raised, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the metallic band, which extends around above the top of the buggyseat, to which the bows are pivoted at the point 2, and from which projects the pin or arm to which the lower end of the jointed brace 4 is pivoted. Over this pin or arm 3 is passed the sleeve 5, upon one side of which is secured the brace or support 6, strengthened upon its'under side by the plate 7. The outer end of the sleeve has a tenon, 8, formed upon it, which fits in a socket formed for it in the end of the jointed brace 4, so that when the brace moves in either direction, in lowering or raising the top of the buggy, the rest or sup port 6 moves with it. This rest or revolving support 6 consists of a plate of any desired length, made preferably concave, so that when the top is lowered the rear bow 9 drops down and rests in it, as shown, and thus relieves the bow from all strain and all danger of being broken.
The construction here described and shown may be varied within the scope of the invention, as I do not confine myself to the arrangement here shown, the invention consisting of a rest or support which will revolve upon its pivot and assume a vertical or horizontal position with the top.
As the supports have heretofore been made they have consisted of extended spring-arms, which have been attached, at their upper ends, directly to the bow, and rested upon the top of an arm extending out from the iron rim of the seat. The support here shown is independent of the bows.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. A revolving support for the bows of buggy-tops, in combination with the brace, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the band a, arm 3, sleeve 5, and support 6 with the brace 4 and bow 9, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of October, 1873.
WILLOUGHBY P. ELAM.
