WAGON-BOX STEP.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JASPER N. HIERONY- MUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairbury, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful VVagon-Box Step, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to steps for use in connection with farm wagons of that type utilizing top boxes.

I-Ieretofore, where one or more top boxes have been used upon a wagon body, it has been extremely difiicult for a person standing in the wagon to climb therefrom and onto the wagon seat.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and compact step, which can be readily applied to the inner side of a box at a point where it can be conveniently reached and used as a means for permitting the occupant of the box to readily ascend or descend.

A further object is to provide a step of this character which can also be used for holding a whip at a point where it can be easily reached by the occupant of the seat.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of in-,

vention disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring. to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a portion of the floor of a wagon body, 2 designates a portion of one side panel, and 3 designates a portion of one end panel. This wagon body can be of the usual or any preferred type, employed in connection with farm wagons, and one or Specification of Letters Patent.

more top boxes of the ordinary construction can be used in connection therewith. In the drawing, portions of two top boxes have been shown, a portion of the lower top box being indicated at 4:, while a portion of the upper top box has been indicated at 5. These top boxes, as before stated, are of the usual construction, each of them including corner cleats 6 and outside cleats 7.

The step constituting the present invention is designed to be placed inside of the lower top box, where two of such boxes are used, or if only one top box is employed, the step can be secured within the upper portion of the wagon body, or, in other words, close to the upper edges of the panels 2 and 3. This step includes a wear plate 8 having a flange 9 extended at right angles from one edge, so that the plate will fit snugly upon the corner of the cleat 6, the flange being extended between the cleat and the adjacent A. single screw 10 can be used for fastening the plate to the cleat. A bolt 11 is extended through the plate and cleat and also through the side panel, and mounted on this bolt is an arm 12, one end of which merges into a loop 13 which constitutes the step proper. The other end of the arm merges into a finger 14 extended substantially at right angles to the arm, and which is adapted to bear against a stop plate 15, which is secured to the end panel. The arm 12 can be secured to the bolt in any preferred manner, and a washer 16 is preferably interposed between said arm and the nut 17 which engages the bolt.

It will be understood that when the step is not in use, the arm 12 can be swung upwardly so as to bring the loop 13 against the end panel. The finger 14: will thus be extended inwardly, as shown in F ig. 2, and the step will not be in the way. Should it be desired to use the step, it is merely necessary to press downward on the finger 14. The arm 12 will thus be swung downwardly and inwardly until brought to the position indicated in Figs. 1and3. "W hen the arm is thus positioned, the finger 1 1 bears against the plate 15.

It will be seen that by providing a step such as described, a person within the wagon body 1 can readily climb therefrom simply by placing a foot on the step, which is preferably located about midway between the floor and the upper edge of the upper top box. Likewise, the step can be conveniently used by a person desiring to descend into the wagon body'from the seat 17 Although the step is preferably provided with a looped tread portion 13, it is to be understood that the step can be of any other construction desired. However, a loop is desirable for the reason that it constitutes an efiicient whip holder.

What is claimed is:

The combination with a side panel, an end panel, and a oleat, of a wear plate embracing one corner portion of the cleat, a bolt eX- tending transversely through the wear plate, cleat and adjacent panel for securing them together, an arm pivotally mounted upon the bolt, a tread portion carried by the arm, and

a finger movable with the arm and extending at an angle therefrom, said finger cooperating with the adjacent panel for holding the tread portion extending substantially horizontally, said tread portion being adapted to swing upwardly and outwardly against the panel, thereby to be held by its own weight in inactive position.
