Description
NTED STATES PATENT OFRECE.
SOLOMON GODDARD AND HENRY WARFIELD, OF TRUXTON, NEW YORK.
RAISING AND LOWERING- CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 7,100, dated February 19, 1850.
T 0 all 'whom` t may concern.'
Be it known that we, SOLOMON GODDARD and HENRY VARFIELD, of the village of TruXton, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Tops; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in so connecting the jointed braces upon the outside of carriage tops at their lower extremities, as that when one of the jointed braces is thrown back the corresponding one on the opposite side will also be thrown back by the same elfort. Construct the carriage top in any of the known or usual forms, having the jointed braces placed in the usual position. Place a metallic rod or shaft (A) along the back of the seat behind the cushion, and projecting upon each side of the carriage top sufhciently far to form a support for the lower extremities of the jointed braces at- Tle shaft (A) is secured in its place by boxes (C) near each extremity in such a manner as to allow a rotary motion. Jointed braces (D) of the usual construction are used, but instead of their playing upon a journal at (B), attach their lower extremities firmly to the ends ofthe shaft (A) either by welding, or by squaring (as shown at (B),) the end of the shaft, and the hole through the jointed brace.
It is obvious that when one of the jointed braces is thrown back, or forward, motion is communicated through the shaft to the brace upon the opposite side, and thus the top may be let down, or braced up by reaching only to the ointed braces upon one side of the top, instead of reaching alternately to the braces upon both sides, as heretofore.
The advantage of our invention consists in working the jointed braces upon both sides of calash tops by one and the same effort of the hand.
Ve do not claim the use of levers or handles upon the inside of carriage tops connected with the jointed braces upon the outlside, for the purpose of working the braces,
All that we claim as o-f our invention, and which we desire to/have secured to us by Letters Patent, is-
Connecting t-he jointed-braces upon opposite sides of carriage tops, by means of a shaft (A) or rod passing back of the seat, in such a manner, that the braces may be worked simultaneously upon both sides, substantially as herein described.
