Description

IIITE SATES A T FIC,
JOHN L. ALLEN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
ELEVATING- AND LOWERING- CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,097, dated February 19, 18 50.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. ALLEN, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Letting Down Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in connecting a handle, lever, or any analogous device, upon the inside of carriage-tops, with joints, or jointed braces upon the outside, by which means the top may be let down or braced up from within.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe its construction and operation.
Construct the carriage-top (A) in any of the known or usual forms, and place the jointed braces (B and C) upon the outside in the usual manner. Make the prop (D) hollow, for the passage of the tube (G) and rod (E). The outer end of the tube (G) is attached firmly to the upper end of the jointed lever (C), and the outer end of the rod (E) is attached to the end of the jointed lever (B). (G) and rod (E) are attached handles (H), or short levers by turning which the jointed braces upon the outside of the top are thrown, and the top let down without the inconvenience of getting out of the carriage as heretofore. Each of thejointed braces may be connected with handles or levers upon the inside of the top in a similar or analogous manner, whereby a person sitting within, may let down the top, or brace it up at pleasure, by simply taking hold of the handle, instead of thrusting the arm out of the carriage. The rods, connected with the handles upon the inside of the top, may
pass out at any point necessary to connect with either extremity of the jointed braces, upon the outside.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Connecting a handle, lever, or any analo- JOHN IV. Coon, R. MOLVERTH.
