Description
Ui. )itin e Lettere Patent No. 91,706, dated .Tune 22, 1869.
`'nvnmovrnr STEP-LADDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part-of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-1, CHARLES EDVARD BOMAN, of San Francisco, .in the eounty'of San Francisco, and State of Calfhrnia, have invented certain4 'new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description lof the samereferenee being had to the accompanying drawings,l and to the letters of reference marked thereon. 1'
'Ihe nature of my invention is to provide a step-` as possible, when placing itin angles` and'corners; but, in such a construction,'the danger of falling in` ascending, by reason of the swaying to and` fro, asl
well as the tipping Aof the ladder, when the apex orv top'is reached, is very great. A
lo overcomethese objections, and, at the same time, provide a light implement, I employ a rail, which is hinged to the side of the ladder V.by A jointed arms, so that it can he foldedA down when not in use.
From 'a cross-bar, near the base of the Hap or brace, extends a jointed bar, with a notch in the end, which reaches to a step beneath, where a catch is placed, and
.in which the end of the bar enters, where a spring prevents it from rising or dying out, if a sudden swaying of the ladder takes place. l
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of n'iyimplement folded up. Figure 2 is a front view, also folded up; Figure 3 is a side view, with the ladder in position,
`and side-rail broken away,`to show the extension-bar and its attachments.
A is the support or ap, which is hinged to the ladder proper in the usual Way.
' l To this support, a littlev below the centre, 1s affixed a cross-piece, b, to which is attached an arm or bar, c,
`jointed at c. l The end of the bar is provided` with a notch, d, which,
. when tlre support is extended, sits in the catch o, that is, attached to the under side of the step j, in which positionthe bar is held by a small spring, g, so that it will not be liable: to become disengaged, and yallow the ladder to fall.
i The bar is also4 useful for binding the steps and support together, as in closing up, the -bar' slides along through the catch', until past the'joint, when it is folded over against the front of fthe" steps, where it is held by a hook, rh, entering a hole,
As a support when, ascending and descending, as well as when standing on the top step', I attach, to one 'or hotlisides of the ladder, a rail, j, by means of arms k, which are bolted to the side-rail, and admit of being turned up and down. l Y
The arms are. also provided with `ioints, l, sothat the rail can be folded down when not innse.
When the rail is extended or raised, itis kept in 'position by a spring, m, that is attached to the siderail of thev ladder. t
My improved ladder will be found'of great usefulness in gathering frnit from treesV and rines, as well as for use in buildings wherel great .height is to be attained.
- Having thus described my invention,4
What I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is. Y p
l The bar o, having the joint o', when used in connection with the catch e, and spring g, and the hook'h, in manner described, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set .my vhand and seal.V
