Patented June 5, 1923.
DEER/ELL E. BROXVN, OF MONDAMIN, IOWA.
ILLUMINATING DEVICE FOR BURIAL GASKETS.
Application filed January 28, 1922. Serial No. 532,513.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DERRELL E. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mondamin, in the county of Douglas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Illuminating Device for Burial Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device found to be useful at funerals or other like occasions when it is desired to view the body of a deceased person while reposing in a burial casket. and has for its object, broadly, to provide a device which may be conveniently secured to the lid of the casket and may be readily removed therefrom, said attachment to be of such arrangement that it may be folded to occupy a limited space, and to consist of few and simple parts so that it may be conveniently and economically manufactured.
With the foregoing objects in view the invention presents a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherem,-
Fig. 1 is a side view of a burial casket, the lid being elevated, and showing the illuminating attachment secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the attachment in longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a side View of the clamp for supporting the device in a hori zontal position on the lid.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the invention is shown and described in connection with a burial casket 5 having a lid 6 mounted to swing from its hinges 7 to make a closure of an opening 8.
In order that the opening may be illuminated when the lid is at open position, I provide an attachment or supporting-element for the lid, consisting of a plurality of tele scoping, tubular sections a, o, 0 and (Z, the last named section being provided with a socket for receiving the stem of an electric light bulb f, and for supporting a hood 9, the tubular section a being provided at its outer end with an apertured cap 9 preferably traversed by the electrical conductors or cord 10, said cord, adjacent to and outwardly of the cap being provided with a stop-member or ball 11.
I provide means for securing the illuminating attachment to the lid and for maintaining it in a horizontal position, consisting of a clamp 12, its pair of wings 13 preferably being hingeably connected, as indicated at h and operating subject to the control of a spring lo.
lVhile I have shown four engaging, tubular sections, their number may be less or greater. One of the wings 13 for the clamp is provided with prongs m and the other wing is provided with prongs 12.
As described, the device may be collapsed to occupy a limited space, and by its use the casket, or that part adjacent to the opening 8, may be illuminated, the tubular sections being extended, the ball 1-1, however, operating to limit the outward sliding movement of the sections since it would engage the cap 9. It will be noted that the prongs are adapted to be disposed at the opposed sides of a tubular section, and since the prongs m and n are disposed in spaced relation they will operate to advantage in maintaining the device in ahorizontal position when the lid has been swung to an upright position.
I claim as my invention, T In an illuminating device for a removabl mounting upon a support, the combination with a tubular lamp-holder, of a pair of upright, angular lever-members pivotally connected between their ends and providing a pair of opposed wings upwardly of their pivotal connection, and providing a pair of gripping-members below their pivotal connection, each gripping-member consisting of a pair of prongs adapted to lie astride in engagement with the tubular lamp-holder, and
means automatically pressing the grippingmembers toward each other for engaging the support.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DERRELL E. BROWN.
