CONRAD M. PITEL, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
EXTENSION-LIGHT FIXTURE Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 25, 1909.
Patented April 20, 1909. Serial No. 474,018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD M. PITEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Light Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a suspension fixture constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a broken view showing the shade ring supporting the nipple with which the flexible conductor is connected. Fig. 3 a side view of the lower portion of a modified form of fixture showing the connection to the burner through the crown.
This invention relates to an improvement in extension-light fixtures having either gas or electricity.
When gas or electricity is used in a vertically adjustable fixture the flexible conductor must be of suflicient length to lead to the burner when the fixture is in its lowest posi tion. Then when the fixture is raised the flexible conductor will hang below the fixture and is inconvenient, not to say, unsightly.
The object of this invention is to provide a support for the flexible conductor and ar range the fixture so that it may be rotated whereby the flexible conductor may be wound about the fixture so as to be supported thereby; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims. r 7
In carrying out my invention I employ a suspension device 2 of any approved con-' struction which is swiveled to a nipple?) or other means for supporting the device. When the fixture is to be supported from the gas pipe the nipple 3 is used to close the end of the pipe, and the nipple is provided with an arm 4 projecting outward at one side and to which the flexible conductor 5 is attached. The suspension device 2 supports the burner in the usual way. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the shade ring 6 is employed to of the drawings.
which the suspension chains 7 are attached, and this ring supports the shade 8 and also the burner 9 which may be a gas burner or electric light bulb. In the shade ring 6 is a nipple 10 having an arm extending to one side to which the flexible conductor 5 is coupled. This nipple 10 connects through a pipe 12 leading to the burner 9. Attached to the shade ring 6 at various points are a series of hooks orarms 13 more or less in number, and, on which the slack portion of the flexible conductor may rest.
. Instead of making the connection with the burner through the shade ring 6 it may be made through the crown, as shown in Fig. 3 In this case a goose neck 11 Will be applied to a nipple 14 and projecting from one side of the crown 15 and leading through a pipe 16 to the burner. In this case the slack portion of the conductor when not in use will rest on the arms 13. By thus providing a support for the slack portion of the conductor when the fixture is raised it may be rotated, turning on its swivel, and the flexible cord or conductor wound about the shade ring and held by the arms. Thus as thefixture is raised the flexible conductor will be supported at a point above the lower portion of the fixture so that it is out of the way.
7 I claim 1. A suspension fixture comprising a swiveled suspension device, a shade support, a burner carried thereby, arms connected with said shade support, and a flexible conductor leading to the burner and adapted to rest upon said arms when the fixture is raised and turned.
2. A suspension fixture comprising a swiveled suspension device, a gas-way above the suspension device, a shade support, a burner, suspended from the shade'support, arms connected with the shade sup ort, and a flexible conductor connected wit 1 the gas way and the burner and adapted when the fixture is raised and turned to rest upon said arms.
3. A suspension fixture comprising a swiveled suspension device, ashade ring supported thereby, a nipple supported by said shade ring, a burner, connection between the nipple and burner, a flexible conductor leading to said nipple With Which it is connected, said shade ring being formed With arms by which the slack portion of the flexible conductor may be supported when the fixture is i raised and turned, substantially as described. In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CONRAD M. PITEL.
