CONRAD M. IITEL, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
DROP-LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application led March 30, 1908. Serial No. 424,256.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CONRAD M. PrrEr., a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drop-Lights; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciiication, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view partially in section of a suspension lamp ixture converted for use with gas or electricity. Fig. 2 a sectional view illustratinflr the adaptation of my invention for use witllianother form of burner.
This invention relates to an improvement in drop lights, the object being to adapt a hanging oil lamp -fixture of the suspension type for use with gas or electricity; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In illustrating my invention I have shown it in connection with the parts of a hanging oil lamp of usual construction which includes av shade-holding ring 2 which supports the shade 3 and to which a harp 1 carrying the font or font shell 5 is connected, the shade ring being suspended by chains 6 to a ring 7 which in turn is suspended by chains 8 with the suspension device 9 which may be of any approved construction adapted to permit the lamp to be raised or lowered. This suspension device is hung upon a hook 10 formed integral with the plug cap 1 1 which is attached to a nipple l2 of the gas pipe in the usual manner. As usual in this class of lamps the shade is provided with a metal crown 13.
As thus far described the parts are of usual construction and may be of any approved design.
Secured to the crown 13 and supported by a bracket 15 attached to the inner face ofthe crown is a hollow arm 16, this arm projecting radially outward from the crown and provided at its outer end with a nipple 17 and at its inner end with a goose neck 18 to which an inverted mantle burner 19 of approved construction is attached, the burner being suspended centrally within the shade 3. Entered into the plug cap 11 and so as to connect with the gas pipe 12 is an outwardly extending pipe arm 20 having a valve 21 operated by a key 22 which may be turned by chains or cords 23, 24, extending downward to convenient points. Coupled with the outer end of the pipe arm 2O and the nipple 17 is a flexible tube 25 through which gas may flow, and the pipe arm 20 will be of Sullicient length so as to carry the lexible connection 25 so far to one side of the shade that it is not liable to be ailiected by heat from the burner.
Instead of em loying an inverted mantle burner as above c escribed, an upright burner may be employed; in which case instead of having a goose neck 18 the hollow arm 16 may be tapped on the underside of its inner end for the attachment of a gas pipe 26 which extends down to the bottom of an u right burner 27 which may be of the I/Ve sbach, Argand or other style of burner, this burner being additionally supported by a dummy pipe 28 extending upward into engagement with the crown 18 at a point opposite the hollow arm 16.
It is apparent without further illustration that instead of using gas, electric lights may be suspended in the same way by carrying the wires out upon an arm and having a long connection between the pipe arm and the hollow arm. It will thus be seen that a hanging oil lamp of usual Construction may have the harp and font removed and the crown replaced by a crown constructed in accordance with my invention and the rest of the device used in its usual way, thus providing a drop light fixture for use with gas or electricity.
I claim 1. A drop light comprising a shade ring, a suspension device for supporting the same, a shade and a metal crown therefor, a hollow arm connected with said crown, a burner supported by said hollow arm, a pipe arm above the fixture, and a flexible conductor connecting the pipe arm and the hollow arm, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a shade ring, a suspension device therefor, a shade supported by the shade ring, a metal crown on said shade, a hollow arm connected with said crown and projecting radially outward therefrom, a nipple at the outer end of said hollow arm, a burner supported by said arm and extending into said shade, a pipe arm projecting outward beyond the suspension de- Vice, and a leXible connection between the pipe arm and the hollow erin, substantially as described.
3. In a drop light, the combination With the suspension device, a shade ring, Supported thereby, a shade, a crown thereon, a hollow erin connected with seid crown and projecting radially outward therefrom, a
nipple et the outer end of said hollow arm, r
a goose neck connected with seid hollow arni and carrying a burner which stands within seid shade, a pipe erin projecting outward l above and beyond the suspension device, and a flexible connection between the pipe arin and the hollow erin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONRAD M. PITEL.
