oL sr.
Application filed August v17, 1922. Serial Nol 582,381.
To all whom it may concern: I I I Be it known that we, JOSEPH Aorro and PAUL TIMEN, citizens of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in a Clasp; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to fastening means designed chiefly for personalwear, such as necklaces, and one of the main objects is the provision of a clasp which is secure against casual opening, thereby preventing the loss of the article fastened thereby.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
lVhile the drawings-illustrate an embodiment of the invention it isto be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changesin the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figures land 2 are obverse and reverse views, respectively, of a clasp embodying the invention, Y
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal section thereof, I
Figure 4: is a transverse section,
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the socket member, and
Figure 6 is a detail perspective new of the catch member. 4
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The clasp comprises essentially a head 1 and a catch 2. The head 1 is hollow and is provided at one end with an attaching ring 3 and is provided in its back with an elongated opening or slot 4.
Said head or socket member 1 has an abut ment 5 secured in its hollow midway of the ends and transverse to said slot.
The catch 2 is elongated and partakes of the nature of a bar and is provided at one end with a crosshead 6 wider than the bar and said slot ant at its oppositefcnd with an engaging ring '1' and a hook 8.. The necklace'orother part to be fastened-has one end engaged with the ring3of the he'adl and the other end'engaged with the ring 7 of the catch member 2. The parts'of the clasp are fastened by positioning the catch member 2 at right angles tothe slot'a andpa'ssing the crosshead 6 through saidslot 4 to the left of the abutment 5, after which the member 2 is given a one-quarter turn to dispose it in slot 4 resting, on abutment 5 and with cross head 6 in abutment therewith after which pressure is exerted upon the outer end of said catch member to-cause the hook 8 to engage the adjacentend of the head l by a snap action. It will thus be understood that when the clasp is fastened, the catch member 2 is seated in the slot 4 and its crosshead 6 is disposed within and crosswise of the elongated slot 4. A clasp constructed in accordance with the invention is not liable to open accidentally because of the twofold I movement required to release the catch memher, one of such movements requiring disengagement of the hook 8 from the head 1 and the other movement necessitating the turning of the head 1 at a right angle to the recess or channel 5 to permit of the crosshead 6 clearing the elongated slot 4. I
What is claimed is: Y I I 1. A clasp having'a head provided-with an elongated slot, a catch for disposition in said slot through turning movement rela-' tively to the head, a cross head on said catch, said cross head adapted for disposition within the slot to resist displacementof the catch from said slot in a direction transversely of, the head, and an abutment located out of said slot and within the head for 'en-' gagement by said cross head to limit longitudinal movement of the latter in one direction.
2. A clasp havinga head provided with a f wall having an elongated slot therethrough,'.
a catch for disposition in said slot through, turning movement relatively to the head, and -means to resist displacement of the catch from said slot movable into overlapping relation with the under surface of said wall through said movement, and means at a distancefrom and supplementing the said means to fasten thecatch to the head;
3. A clasp having a head provided with an elongated s1ot,a catch for dispositionin said a slot through turning movement relatively to the head, means to resist displacement of the catch from said slot movable to utile position through said movement, and means supplementing the said means to fasten the catch to the head consisting of coacting snap means on said catch and head.
4. A clasp having a hollow head provided with an elongated slot, an abutment within the head midway of the ends of said slot and disposed transversely of the slot, a catch for disposition in said slot through turning movementrelatively to the head, a cross head on said catch adapted to overlap the JOSEPH ACITO.
