SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,445, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed Sepiember 1S, 1885. Serial No.17'lA82. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAMBERT J. BRISTOL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the com plete snap-hook; Fig. 2, a side view, partly in section; Fig. 3, a section on line 1 1 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The invention relates to an improvement in snap-hooks which employ a bolt or plunger, the object being the casting of a hook with a longitudinal slot, which will be partly closed in the process of finishing for the protection of the spring inclosed; also to provide a means to lock the bolt.
The invention consists in the construction of the hook, as hereinafter fully described.
The tubular shank A is cast with a slot, a, nearly its entire length, leaving sufficient metal at the sides to be turned over to form a complete circle at its rear portion, B, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 3. Less metal is employed between the points 0 (1, so that when the sides are turned over a slot, e, is left for the free action position.

At the forward end of the slot a rectangular slot, f, is provided, for the purpose of locking the bolt when in its forward The stud b being fastened to the bolt C, the said bolt is actuated by the stud. When securely fastened, the stud is turned into the slot f. The usual spring, 9, is employed. The shank is provided at its front end with the usual hook, H, and at its rear end witha means of attachment to the strap or chain.
I do not wish to confine myselfto the shape or form of the sides of the portion B as described, as one side of the said part B may be provided with a projecting piece dovetailed to the other side, as shown in broken lines, Fig. 1.
The hook, as described, can be cast from any suitable metal, thereby making a cheap and durable snap-hook.
