Be it known that I, ARNOLD H. TRAMEP., a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of N ew Jersey, have invented cer- Improvements in Separable Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved two-part fastening for separably connecting two articles or two parts of the same article. y fastener is adapted to a variety of uses in different arts, and particularly in the jewelry art where, among other purposes, it may be used for connecting the ends of a necklace, chain, bracelet or band, or for unitingthe two heads of a separable cuff link.
The objects of the invention are to provide a fastener of simple, novel and efficient construction, the parts of which can be easily fastened together or separated, and which, when fastened, cannot become accidentally unfastened. Y
The invention resides in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and pointedout in the appended claims.

Generally speaking, the device consists of an entering member; and a slotted tubular member, having an encompassingslidable guard-sleeve, adapted to receive the entering member and to engage it in such manner as to prevent accidental unfastening.

The peripheral diameter of the tube 3 is approximately equal to the width of the member l, measured between opposite points of its parallel edges; and the widths of the slots 4 and 5 are substantially equal to the breadth of said member l, so that when said member is inserted in the tube it will fit snugly in the slots with its edges flush with the surface of the tube.

tube 3 and serves both to limit the fore and aft movement of the sleeve and to prevent it from turning. A spring 10, housed in the closed end of the tube 3 and pressing against the pin 8, acts to hold the sleeve normally in forward position so as to cover `the slots 4 and 5 throughout substantially their entire lengths.
In fastening the parts, the portion 1 of the entering member is inserted angularly into the tubular member 3 through the entrance slot 4 thereof the curved or beveled end of the entering pushing on the pin 8 so as to slide the sleeve 7 back to uncover the entrance slot. IVhen the parts are in fastened relation, the bar 6 of the receiving member engages the notch 2 of the entering' member and thereby prevents disengagement by direct axial pull or thrust of the parts while the guard-sleeve 7 prevents disengagement through relative angular movement of the parts. To unfasten the parts, the guard-sleeve is retracted and the entering member is pulled out with a slight downward movement.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention I am aware that various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example the form and location of the interengaging elements of the entering and the receiving members may be varied from that shown, or other equivalent means may be employed to prevent disengagement of the parts by direct axial pull or thrust.

It is to be understood that the remote ends of the tWo parts of the fastener may be shaped as required for the use to Which the fastener is to be put. 1. A separable fastener comprising an entering member, a tubular receiving member having an entrance slot, and a retractable guard slida-bly mounted on the receiving member and normally covering the entrance slot, said entering and receiving members having interlocking parts.

A separable fastener comprising a blade-like entering member having a notch in one edge, a tubular receiving member having a longitudinal entrance slot and having a part for engaging the notch of the entering member, and a retractable guardsleeve slidably mounted on the receiving memberand normally covering the entrance thereof.
3. A- separable fastener comprising a blade-like entering member having a notch in one edge, a tubular receiving member having alongitudinal entrance slot and hai/'ing apart for engaging the notch of the entering member, a retractable guard-sleeve slidably mounted on the receiving member, and
a spring contained in the receiving member member being substantially and acting on the sleeve to normally hold it in its extended position so as to cover the entrance slot.
4t. A separable fastener comprising a blade-like entering member having a beveled end and a notch in one edge, a tubular receiving member having a longitudinal entrance slot and having a part for-'engaging the notch of the entering member, a retractable sleeve slidably mounted on the receiving member and covering the entrance slot when in extended position, said sleeve carrying a pin which passes transversely through guide openings in the receiving ember, and a spring housed in the receiving member and pressing against said pin to normally hold the sleeve in its extended position.
5. A separable fastener comprising a blade-like entering member having a notch in one edge, a tubular receiving member having diametrica-lly opposite slots for receiving the edges of the entering member, one of said slots constituting an entrance slot for insertion of the entering member, said receiving member having a part for engaging in the notch of the enteringV member, the peripheral diameter of the receiving equal to the width of the enteringmember, and a slidable guard-sleeve encompassing the receiving member and coi-acting therewith .to resist accidental unfastening of the members.
