Description
Patented May 22, 1923.
NEE. STATES PATENT WALTER G. BEACHAMI, OF CLAYTON, MISSOURI.
COIHIBINED DOOR STOP AND HOLDER.
Application filed November 25,1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER C. BnAoi-mrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door Stops and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists of a combined door stop and holder having for an object to provide a device which will effectively stop and hold a door thereby preventing accidental slamming of the same by wind or other forces.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character which may be conveniently secured in the path of movement of the door to hold the latter, yet so constructed that mutilation of the door will be eliminated.
The above and other objects of this invention will be in part described and in'part understood from the following description of the persent preferred embodiment of l the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein h Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a stop and bolder constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the base portion of the invention.
The device of th s invention consists of a base generally designated 1 which is preferably stamped from sheet metal and is of circular configuration. A plurality of lugs 5 are stamped out from the plate l and are bent down to provide supporting feet. These feet are apertured for the reception of suitable securing means by which the base is anchored to a floor or other support. By bending the lugs 5 downwardly the body of the base will be elevated from the floor as illustrated in Fig. 2.
A frame generally designated 6 is pivotally mounted on the base 4: and in the present instance consists of a pair of spaced crescent shaped plates 7 which are secured together by bolts 8. A pair of these bolts are arranged in close proximity to the ends of the plates and have revolubly mounted thereon yielding rollers 9 made of rubber or other suitable material. Portions of these roller project appre ably b yond he Serial No. 517,671.
plates 7 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Rising is held spaced from the upper face of the T base 4 by means of awasher 12.
In order to retain the frame 6 inv a desired position on the base, so that the door may be retained in a, predetermined position. suitable means is provided. The means in this instance consists of a cylinder 12 which is arranged through the frame 6 in parallelism with the shaft 10. The cylinder carries a coil spring 18 the upper end of which is in engagement with a screw threaded plug 14 while the lower end is engaged with a ballbearing- 15. The ball bearing is adapted for engagement in any one of a series of correspondingly formed recesses 16 which are formed in the top of the base l. It will be noted that the cylinder 12 extends downwardly below the lower of the frame plates 7 so asto adequately control the movement of the ball. bearing 15.
In use of this device, it will. be apparent that immaterial of the direction of movement of the door. one of the rollers 9. may be in its path of movement so as to absorb shock from the door. The impact of the door with the roller will cause the frame 6 to be moved on its axis thereby urging the ball bearing: 15 from one recess to another. The device may be so located that when the door is in a completely open position it will be engaged between the two rollers 9 as indicated by the dotted lines in 1. It is to be understood that tension on the spring 13 may be varied by adjustment of the screw plug 14 which latter has a kerf formed thereon to permit convenient movement thereof by a screw driver or other suitable instrument. It is moreover to be understood that the device of this inventionmay be located so as to hold the door in any desired position. Also. the device is capable of application with objects other than doors.
Although I have above described what' now seems to be the preferred form of this invention. it is nevertheless to be understood that the invention is capable of modificat o s so P uce oth r sul s em aware,, h owever, that such changes may be made by me Within the scope of the ap-' pended claims. c
' What is claimed is v 1. A device 01. the character described including an upstanding base provided with recesses, a frame pivotally mounted on said base and equipped With abutment rollers, a cylinder mounted in said frame, a spring pressed ball. mounted in said cylinder and engageable in anyone of. the recesses of said base, and means to adjust the'tension of said' springpressed ball.
2. A device as specified including a base, a frame movably mounted on the baseand equipped with yielding abutments, and adjustable meanscarried by the frame and engageable with thebase to retain the frame in a predetermined position on the base.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in vpresence of two Witnesses.
