Application filed November and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement 111 Leveling Devices for Billiard Tables and the like;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to billiard tables,

pool tables and other structures which are required to be kept level, and its object is to provide a device of simple and rugged construction whereby such a structure may be quickly and accurately leveled.

In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a portion of a billiard table leg resting thereon, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device and through the adja cent portion of the table leg.

Billiard tables and pool tables are required to be kept accurately level, but no mechanical means have been employed for this purpose up to this time. It has been customary to prepare a floor or other foundation for the table as nearly level as possible, and when the table is placed in position to make the necessary fine adjustment of the legs by slipping pieces of paper, cardboard or the like under legs until the proper level is produced. This requires considerable time and skill, and at best produces only approximately accurate results unless the work is done with the greatest care.

According to my present invention, I mount one or more of the table legs, preferably all four of them, upon supports which are vertically adjustable by means of screws. In the embodiment of my invention herein shown, the leveling device consists of a base having a central circular recess, a screw having an enlarged circular head fitting rotatably in the recess, and preferably separated from the bottom of the recess by means of washers of non-metallic material, and an annular supporting member which is internally screw-threaded to engage the screw and which has a lateral flange which serves to support the leg of the table. In order to apply the device to the table leg, it is only necessary to bore a hole in the bottom of the table leg of proper size to receive a central upstanding flange with which the sup porting member is provided. the screw is, adapted to be turned by any suitable means. In the device as shown herein, the screw head has several horizontal openings into which'a shortbar may be inserted for turning the screw.

In the drawing, the numeral 2 indicates the lower portion of one leg of a billiard or pool table having an opening 3 bored into its lower side. The opening 3 fits over and upstanding flange t which is formed integral with an annular supporting member 5. The supporting member5 has a horizontal laterally extending flange 6 which rests flush against the under surface of the table leg 2. The supporting "member 5 is also provided with a'central opening which, is internally screw threaded to engage the external screwtlireads formed on a hollow screw 7, the circular head 8 of which is enlarged and fits within a recess 9 formed in the top of a base member 10. Within the recess 9,the base member 10 has boss or projection 12 which extends into the recess 9.

The head 8 of the screw 7 preferably has a central opening 13.which receives a plug or pin 14 that "is "driven through a corresponding countersunk opening in the bottom of the base member 10.

Between the lower surface of the screw head 8 and the horizontal surface of the re cess 9, I preferably provide'one or more washers 15 of suitable non-metallic material, such as vulcanized fiber soaked in oil, these washers having central openings to enable the washers to fit around the projection 12 of the base 10. These washers enable the screw to be turned readily without sticking In assembling the leveling device, the

washers 15 are fitted into the recess 9 around V i the projection 12, and the head of the screw is then inserted in the recess 9, after which the plug 14 is driven through the openings in the base 10 and in the screw head 8. The supporting member 5 is then screwed upon the screw 7 When the device is to be applied to the table leg 2, the flange 4 of the supporting V member 5 is inserted in the opening 3 in the table leg, and the leg is lowered upon the floor or other foundation 18. The supporting member 5 is then adjusted to its proper vertical position by means of the bar 17, a spirit-level being suitably placed upon the table to assist in making the adjustment.

If desired, ball bearings, roller bearings or the like may be readily placed between the screw head 8 and the base 10, instead of the washers 15, and such bearings will serve the same purpose as the washers 15, to reduce the friction between the parts when the screw is turned.

It will be seen that the device herein shown is very simple in construction and produces a positive means for quickly adjusting the legs of a billiard table or other structure so as to bring the top of said structure to an accurate level.

The accompanying drawing shows the full size of the device as I now prefer to con struct it. It will be understood, however, that various changes in the size, construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from my invention, the scope of which is indicated in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A leveling device for billiard tables, pool tables or the like comprising a base having a circular recess formed in its top, a screw having a circular head received in said recess, a washer interposed between the under surface of said screw head and the bottom of said recess, a projection in said base extending from the bottom of said recess and through the openings in said washers, a plug extending through said base and projection and into said screw-head, and a supporting member mounted upon said screw and having a lateral flange for supporting the leg of a billiard table or the like. 2. A leveling device for billiard tables, pool tables or the like comprising a base having a circular recess formed in its top, a screw having a circular head received in said recess, washers interposed between the under surface of said screw-head and the bottom of said recess, a projection in said base extending from the bottom of said recess and through the openings in said washers, a plug extending through said base and projection and into said screw-head, and a supporting member mounted on said screw and having an upstanding flange and also having a horizontal peripheral supporting flange, the head of said screw having one or more horizontal openings for the insertion of an instrument for turning said screw. A leveling device for billiard tables, pool tables or the like, comprising a base having a circular recess formed in 1ts top, a circular head received in and supported by the bottom wall of said recess, a boss extend ing upwardly from the bottom of said recess and disposed centrally thereof, and anti-friction members disposed between the bottom surface of said screw and the bottom of said recess and surrounding said boss.
