PA'TEN HE.
JONATHAN FARVER, OF SHIPSHEWANNA, INDIANA.
HINGE.
Application filed April 27, 1922. Serial No. 557,013.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN FARVER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of Shipshewanna, county of LaGrange, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges, and especially to hinges for supporting swinging display frames, or the like.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a hinge for a plurality of display boards, or frames, whereby the latter may be swung out of the way. when not in use and folded back against a wall, door, or the like.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a plurality of display frames mounted upon the invention and showing several of the frames swung against a wall; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one hinge and its bracket.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawing.
Referring to the details of the drawing, he numerals 1 to T inclusive indicate a plurality of upright display frames or boards car ried by the two upper and lower hinge ele-' ments 8 and 9, respectively, which frames may be secured to a wall 10, or the like, as hereinafter described. Both of the hinges S and 9 are alike in construction and com prise an angular or L-shaped bracket adapted to be fastened to the wall 10 by screws 12, and a plurality of hinge arms 13 to 19 inclusive, which arms are pivotally mounted on said bracket by a hinge pin 20.
The frames 1 to T inclusive may be fastened to the hinge arms by screws 21, 21, or in any other suitable manner. As illustrated. my improved hinge comprises an unequal number-sevenof hinge arms, of which the medial arm 16 is substantially straight and flat, and the others somewhat angularly formed, as hereinafter described. illustrated in Fig. 3 the hinge arms, when disposed in parallel relation, all lie in the same horizontal plane to bring the frame tops even. This condition isefiected by providing all of the hinge arms, excepting 16, with the angular base or shank portions 22, 23, 24;, respectively, of varying the pin 20 and said wall.
lengths and angularity, and also by upwardly off-setting the arms 13, 13 and 15 at 25,
which are disposed on one side of the arm 16, and by downwardly off-setting the arms 17, 18 and 19 at 26, the latter arms being disposed on the other side of arm 16, in which positions the said arms bear a right and left hand relation to each other.
The length of the bracket 11 in its horizontal extent from the wall 10 is sufficient to enable the longest hinge arm shanks 22, of arms 13 and 19, to swing freely between Preferably, the hinge arms 13'to 19 inclusive are made of suitable sheet metal to insure light weight, but may be otherwise constructed.
I claim l. A hinge for a device of the character described comprising abracket element provided with a pintle; a plurality of arms hinged to said pintle, each of said arms being provided with an angular shank, a portion of said arm shanks extending from said hinge pintle to the right thereof and the others to the left thereof, said arms being off-set in oppositedirections to bring their outer ends within the same plane; and a medial arm hinged to said pintle, said arm being substantially straight.
2. In a hinge for a device of the character described, a bracket element pro vided vwith a pintle; and a plurality of arms hinged to said pintle, each of said arms be ing provided with an angular shank, a por-- tion of said arm shanks extending from said hinge pintle to the right thereof and the others to the left thereof, all of said arms being offset either upward or downward.
to bring their outer ends within the same plane.
3. A hinge for a device of the character described comprising a bracket element provided witha pintle; a plurality of arms hinged to said pintle, each of said arms being provided with an angular shank, a portion of said arm shanks extending from said hinge pintle to the right thereofand the others to the left thereof, said arms being off-set either upward or downward to bring their outer ends within the same plane; and
a substantially straight medial arm hinged to said pintle. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 22 day of April, 1922.
I JONATHAN FARVER.
