IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSH-HOLDERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES L. W. BAKER, of the city and county of Camden and State of N ew Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BruslLHolders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact descript-ion of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention. This invention consists in the combination of parts whereby a brush may be held and worked without liability to accidental disengagement, as will be stated.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the handle, and B a hollow screw-shank iitted on said handle and adapted to rotate thereon. C represents a head, consisting of a loop or frame attached to a hub, which is iirmly connected to the end of the handle A. One end ofthe screw-shank B comes against the inner side ofthe hub of the head C, and the other end bears against a shoulder on the handle A, so that the shank is confined in place, but

has free rotating motion on the handle, fingerpieces or wings a being provided for convenient operation of the Shank. A nut, D, is fitted on the screw-shank B, and has attached to it a frame, E, which is constructed, preferably, of wire, and is passed through the loop ofthe head C.

It will be seen that, by rotating the screwshank, the nut D is advanced toward or withdrawn from the head C; consequently the frame VE will be correspondingly operated when desired or necessary.

A hook, G, projects from the head C, and the outer end of the frame E is turned or bent, as at G', in the direction toward the hook, so that there is formed a clamp for holding a scrubbing or other brush, and thus avoiding the tedious operation of stooping or bending to use such brush. f

One of the great objections to brush-holders has been the tendency of the nut or screw to turn and thereby loosen or release the applied brush. This has been caused by the unintentional turning of the handle by the person using it, or the knocking of one corner oi' the frame, head, or other parts which have been attached to a rotary screw or turning' nut,l but this is prevented by my invention.

The screw-shank can only be turned by hand, and the nut cannot be moved unless operated by the shank. The head and frame have no rotating motions, and thus the movable parts not being exposed to accidental movement, the hold of the brush is insured at all times.

A brush-holder, consisting of the screw- Shank B, Swiveled on the stick or handle A, in combination with the nut or ring I), the frame or yoke E, and hook G', and with the head C and hook G, all as set forth.
