Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
NELsON HOMES, OF LAONA, NEW YORK.
lMPFtOVED MOP-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,642, dated May 9, 1865.
To all whomA it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NELSON HOMES, of Laona, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mop-Head; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichy Figure l is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, partly in section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same taken in the line .fr x, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and im proved means for moving the adjustable bar or jaw of the mop-head, whereby the same may be readily moved for securing the mop in the head and releasing it therefrom, and at the same time prevented from movin g casually.
A represents the iixed jaw or portion of the 1nop-head, which may be described as a bar forming three sides of a quadrangle, and two arms, a a, which are secured in a crossbar, b, on a nut, B, in which a screw, C, works, said screw being at one end of a socket, D, in which the wooden handle E of the mop-head is fitted.
The outer part of the screw G, or, rather, the rod on which the screw is cut or formed, is prolonged and ofless diameter than the screw, as shown at F in Fig. 2, and on this part F there is iitted a sleeve, G, within which and around F a spiral spring, H, is placed, said spring having a tendency to keep the outer end of the sleeve G, which is provided with ratchet-teeth c, pressed against similar teeth, d, at the inner side of the movable or adjustable jaw I, through which a journal, e, at the outer end ot' F, passes centrally, said journal having a head, f, at its outer end to retain the jaw upon it. The ends ofthe jaWI are notched to receive the sides of the fixed jaw A, which sides serve as guides for it.
The part F of the screw-rod has two longitudinal slots, g g, made in it at opposite sides, to receive spurs h on the sleeve G, and at the inner end of each slot g2 there is a notch, i, to admit of the spurs h being fitted or turned therein so as to keep the teeth c of the sleeve inward and free from the teeth d of the jaw I when desired, as shown in Fig. 2. When the sleeve G is held in this position, the socket and screw may be turned, and in consequence `of the latter working in the nut B it will be seen that the jaw I may be moved toward and from the jaw A, the outer side, ax, thereof, which is the jaw A proper. When the jaw I is moved from the side a of A, the mop is inserted between ax and I, and the sleeve G is then released by turning it so that the spurs li will be moved out from the notchesi and in line with the slots "g, when the spring H will throw the sleeve outward and cause its teeth to engage with those of the jaw I. With the sleeve G in this position the screw C may be turned in the direction to force the jaw I toward the mop and cause it to be firmly grasped and held between a and I, as the teeth of the sleeve will slip over those of jaw I 5 but the sleeve cannot turn in the opposite direction, and hence the casual receding of the jaw I from 0L is prevented, and consequently the accidental liberation of the mop.
In order to remove the mop from the head, the sleeve G is pressed inward so that its spurs 'h will reach the inner ends of the slots g, and
the sleeve then turned so that the spurs will catch into the notches i, when the jaw Imay be moved inward from a* and the mop removed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-f i The screw C, in connection with the nut B and sleeve G, the latter being provided with ratchetteeth c, and arranged on the part F of the screwrod with a spiral spring, H, the part F being provided with slots and notches to receive the spurs of the sleeve, and connected with the jaw I, as shown, and the jawprovided with ratchet-teeth b, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
NELSON HOMES. Witnesses:
E. D. HOMEs, WLLLIAM C. GRAHAM.
