IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCH.

Be it known that I, JOHN GooDIN, of Centralia, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Wrenches; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon. l
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a cam-wheel, for tighteningA the jaws on a wrench, which wrench is so constructed that it can be used for gas-pipes and other purposes.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which my invention appertains to make and use the Same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of' this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench, and
Figure 2 is a'perspective of a lever, which may be used to tighten the jaws of the wrench.
A represents a har, of suitable material and length, which passes through the handle, B, and is fastened at its lower end by a nut, C, as shown in fig. 1. i l
Or'n 'thc upper end ofthe bar A, the jaw D is `firmly secured, and the jaw E, which is slotted, slides up and down on the said har. 0n one side ofthe bar A, the jaws D and E are formed as usual in wrenches, but, on the other side they are grooved out, forming, when put together, aground hole, the surface of which grooves` is corrugated, as shown, whereby the wrench becomes adapted to irmlyihold pipes `for any purposes desired, and to turn round nuts as well as those with square sides.
The movable jaw E is provided with two arms, a a, on lits lower side, which arms slide along the edges of the bar A, and are connected at their lower endsby cross-pieces, b 6. On the side of the bar A is pivoted a cam-wheel, F, which operates on the lower side of the movable E, moving the same upwards against the stationary jaw D. A pawhd, on one of the cross-pieces b, ts into notches on the side of thecam-wheel F,
thus holding the movable jaw E at any point desired. 'A spring, e, presses against the pawl d, preventing its escape from the said 'notches unless pressed downbythe operator.
The cam-wheel F is cut with a square hole through it, as seen in the drawings, and in this hole the upper end of' the lever G is inserted, the more easily to turn the cam-wheel F, and tighten the jaws. The lower end of the lever G is formed soas to answerI for a screw-driver, but said lever may be entirely dispensed with, if
desired. l
It will be seen that after tightening the jaws by means ofthe cam-wheel F, it is not necessary to remove the pawl d and turn the wheel backward, but keep on turningvthevwheel the first way, and it will work against the cross-piece b, separating the jaws. v
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the notched cam-wheel F, pawl d, spring e, for the kpurpose of adjusting the movable vjaw on a monkey-wrench, constructed and operating substantially'as herein set forth.
