Description
F. J. M, MILES HOLDER FOR COMPACTS pr. M, 1923. mmmw Filed Nov. 50, 1921 Patented l7, 3.55523.
FRANK J. MILES, OF NEW @ssrenon ro cnnnnrav, Inc, or" new HOTEL-lit COEIPACTS.
Application filczl l lovember 30, 1.921.
To all 'wl'om 2Z2- may concern:
Be it l nown the" l, FRANK d. M. Mines, a citizen of the United States, residing at W. 52 Street, New York, in the county or? New York and vEltate of New Yorlr. have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Holders "for Compacts, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of holder for compacts.
Hitherto compacts, as of face powder 1 the like, have been made by compressing the powder to an extent dependent upon he composition thereof. it being necessary to compress the powder so slightly that some of the powder can be readily rubbed off by means of a powder puff or the like. This ias been difficult to accomplish, because if the compactwere sufliciently compressed so as to have proper coherence, the powder could not be readily rubbed oil, and ii the powder were suiliciently compressed so as to make strong cake or compact. then a good deal of it was wasted because the powder could not be readily rubbed oii'.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a combination compact and holder therefor, which shall prevent a loosely compressed compact, of a proper degree of coherence, from breaking or crumbling.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combination compact and holder therefor which shall be sanitary, and can be readily carried in a handbag, purse or the like. v
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following descriptions and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4.- is a perspective View of the cover of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the filler member.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the container member.
The filler consists of a receptacle 1, preferably made of resilient metal having an outwardly turned flange 6, which is also stamped so as to be resilient. A powder compact 5 is formed therein by means of dies, so that, as clearly shown in Figs. 2
Serial 1 0. 518.769.
and 5, the top of the compact is somewhat convex and the side Walls thereof are about the level of the bottom of the said flange 6. Before the powder compact 5 is formed 1n the member 4:, the said flange 6 thereof fits snugly in the box or receptacle 1, but when the powder compact 5 is formed by means of pressure, the said flange 6 is additionally forced outwardly, so that when it is forced into the box 1, the flange 6 exerts a firm frictional grip upon the box or receptacle 1. so as to keep the filler in place.
As the powder is used up, the member 4 becomes more and more loose with respect to the receptacle 1, so that it finally can be taken out quite easily, although the flange 6 may have some frictional hold even when the receptacle is empty.
It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the tangents drawn at the ends of the top of the compact 5, are substantially perpendicular to the adjacent rounded inner part of the flange 6, so that the pressure exerted in making the compact forces the flange 6 outwardly.
The box or receptacle 1 is provided with an ordinary cover 2, which can also be made of metal and it is obvious that the device can be decorated in various ways.
By means of this improved construction and the method of assembling the parts, the receptacle 4 can be repeatedly withdrawn when empty and replaced by another compact.
l have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changesand omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
ll claim 1. In combination, a container, a receptacle formed of resilient metal and having an outwardlyturned flange at the top thereof, a compact compressed within said receptacle so as to be frictionally held therein and to expand it at the said flange to a slight degree, said. flange being adapted to have a frictional hold upon the inner wall of said container when said receptacle containing the compact is forced within said container.
2. In combination, a container, a receptaole formed of resilient metal and having an outwardly turned flange, a compact compressedwithin said receptacle so as to expand it to a slight degree, said compact &
having a convex top, the edge of which is adjacent the bottom of said flange, said flange being adapted to have a frictional hold upon the inner wall of said container when said receptacle is forced within said container, the tangents drawn at the edges of said convex top being substantially perpendicular to said flange.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my 20 signature.
FRANK J. M. MILES.
