COMPANY, A CR'PORAIIONy OF MASSACHUSETTS.
HAIR ROLL 0R PUFF.
Application filed December 19, 1921. Serial No. 523,267.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MURRAY C. DAMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Hair Roll or Puff, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates .to a hair roll or puff of that type in which a curved light and iiexible body, usually of ya circular cross section, is applied to and held in the hair by means of a comb or combs attached thereto. v
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a way of attaching the combs to the roll-or puff that will permit of the extension of the latter longitudinally and its subsequent contraction without releasing it from its connection with the comb itself; andto provide this arrangement in Isuch a simple and inexpensive form that this additional function can be secured with out really adding to the expense of the device. n Reference is to be had tothe accompanyinof drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a hair puff or roll with a preferred embodiment of this invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an inside elevation of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a plan View of a modified construction.
In the form shown in the first two figures, I have illustrated the invention as applied to a puff or roll 10 formed in the shape of a tubular fabric of spring wire. It is to be understood however that I do not wish to limit the invention to this particular form of roll as it can be applied to rolls formed of other fabrics and materials. It will not be necessary to describe this inl detail as the form illustrated is well known.
It has been customary heretofore to attach a comb, as 11, rigidly to such puffs or rolls at two or more points. This eliminated one advanta e of the tubular puff, namely its extensibi ity, and although these devices have been used for a number of years, some with combs and some without, the fact that those without combs could be drawn out and increased or decreased in length while those with combs could not'be, has not, so far as I am aware, resulted in tudinal slot 13 on each side of the center of the back of the combi, together with "a connecting device. This connectingdevice isshown in the form of a headed stud 14,
.the shank of which passes through the slot 13, and also between the meshes of the rolll or puff 10. lInside the same'the're is a retaining plate or bar 15 to which the shank of the head is connected, preferablydetachably, but in such a way that it is not possible for it to be detached instantly in ordinary use. This bar, being inside the puff, can move and the shank, passing through the meshes of the pu, will move with it, if the puit' is extended. This forms a guide which will insure that the inner wall of the puitl is in contact with the concave comb throughout its length no matter whether the puff is contracted or expanded. It 4also causes the puff and comb to be kept in longitudinal alignment In the use of the device the wearer grasps the puff in the two hands and moves the comb down in the hair at the rear of the head, and at the same time is able to draw the puff out longitudinally at both ends so as to fix it nicely in position in the hair.
This leaves the puff free to move if the hair in which it is located is in such position as to allow it to. In other words, it gives flexibility to it, and allows it to assume any natural position which may be desired. It does not disturb the position of the comb which remains central at all times, and it enables the user to employ a single puff to secure varying effects. It is especially advantageous for use with small hats.
Other guiding and connecting arrangements can be used within the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. I have shown one of these in the form illustrated in Fig. 3. Here the same principle is maintained, but in this case nothing passes through the puff on the inside, the comb 11 being connected with the puff by means of a connection that surrounds the latter. This consists, in the form shown, of a pivot piece 20 secured to the back of the comb near its end and a ring 21 of Celluloid, rubber, cord, or the like pivoted to this pivot piece and surrounding the puff or roll. Any
other fastening device, as for example, a Wire or elastic, can be passed around it for the same purpose, llt has the same effect as in the other` case, the holding of the puff or roll against the back of the comb in all positions, alignment, and perfect freedom of adjustment of the former.
Although l have illustrated and described only two specific embodiments of the invention I am aware of the fact that many other modifications may be made therein by any person skilled in the art Without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but what I do claim is l. As an article of manufacture, a hair roll or puff provided with a comb secured centrally thereof at one point on the concave side, and means on opposite sides of said point for adjustably connect-ing the comb with the puff and keeping the puff in contact with the back of the comb in all adjusted positions.
2. The combination with an expansible hair roll or puff in curved form, of a curved comb for attachment to the hair xedly secured to the concave side thereof at a point central with respect thereto, and means slidably connecting the comb and puff on opposite sides of said central point for keeping them in longitudinal alignment in all adjusted positions.
3. The combination with a hollow expansible hair roll or puff, of a comb for attachment to-the hair fixedly connected to the side thereof, and means on the comb a distance from the connection and extending` inside the roll for adjustably connecting it with the puff or roll.
a. The combination with a tubular eX- pansible hair roll or puff, of a comb for attachment to the hair ixedly secured to the side thereof at a central point, guides connected with the back of the comb, headed studs passing` into said guides, and bars at the rear ends of said studs located inside the tubular puff or roll, said heads having shanks extending through the meshes of the puff or roll and connected with the bar.
In testimony7 whereof l have hereunto affixed my signature.
MURRAY C. DAMON.
