- HENRY J. HAMMANN, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.
Application filed March 6, 1322. Serial No. 541,414.
1 '0 ((7? 207mm. if may concern Be it known that HENRY J. HAMMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to fruit jar holders, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a flexible band adapted to encircle a jar, one end of said flexible band being secured to a jaw of a handle member formed from crossed pivoted members. the other end being provided with an elongated slot having oppositely disposed recesses for allowing a headed screw carried by the aw of the other crossed member to be passed through the elongated slot and the end of the flexible band held in such a manner that the band may be adjusted to various sizes of jars.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed. it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the jar holder showing the parts in position to be adjusted.
Figure 2 is a detailed plan view of the jaw members of the crossed handle, and the adjacent ends of the flexible band, showing the same in position on the jaws.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of the band, showing a modified form of band wherein a fabric lining is used, for preventing slipping.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a handle member formed from crossed members'2 and 3 which members are pivoted together at 4, and when grasped and forced together at their ends 5 move the jaws 3 and 2 together, the action being substantially the' same as that of conventional forms of pliers. Secured to the outer flattened end 6 of the jaw 3 by means of a screw 7 is the end 8 of a flexible band 9, which band is adapted to extend around a jar and be contracted in such a manner as to hold the jar during a cover removing operation, said holding being accomplished by contraction of the band as a whole. The end 10 of the flexible band is provided with an elongated slot 11, the opposite sides of which slot at spaced intervals are provided with registering notches 12' and through which notches the head 13 of a holding screw 14 may be passed when the shank 15 of the holding screw disposed in the slot 11 in any position desired according to the size of the jar and the band securely clamped to the angularly disposed portion 16 and the 2 by means of the knurled thumb nut 17.
During the cover removing operation, it will be seen that it will only be necessary after the band 9 has been properly adjusted to dispose the band around the jar and contract the band by forcing the ends 5 of the crossed members 2 and 3 together.
By referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that a fabric lining 18 has been provided for the band 9, which fabric may be adhesively or otherwise secured to the band and forms means for preventing slipping of the band on the jar during a wrenching operation.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new anduseful is 1. A jar wrench comprising crossed pivoted members, a flexible band, one end of said flexible band being detachably connected to the end of one of the arms of the crossed members, the adjacent end of the crossed member being provided with a right angled lug, a headed clamping screw extending through said lug and adapted to pass through an elongated slot in the other end of the flexible band and a thumb nut threaded on said screw and forming means whereby the band may be held at various diameters according to the size of the jar.
2. The combination with a jar holder of the flexible band and cross handle type, said g2 mes es I band having one of its ends attached to one of registration With the enlarged portions, end of one of the cross handles, a headed and a thumb nut carried by said headed screw carried by the end of the other memscrew and forming means whereby the free 10 her of the crossed handle, said headed screw end of the band may be securely held.
being adapted to be received in enlarged In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my portlons of an elongated slot in the free signature.
end of the band and moved to a position out HENRY J. HAMMANN.
