APPLICATION FILED DEC- l-9, 1921.

PRESERVE-CAN HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns A. Twas, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preserve-Can Holders. of which the followin is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
tion is to provide a device of the class specified comprising two jawmembers provided at one end with hand-pieces and the opposite ends of which are connected or joined by a chain or link construction, whereby the separate parts of the device are permanently connected; a further object being to provide means cooperating with said chain or link construction for adjusting the position of said jaw members one from another; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which V Fig. 1 is a perspective view showingone use of my improved can holding device; and, I
2 a detail plan view of the device. Heretofore it has been customary in the operation of opening a tin can containing preserved food products and the like to grasp the can in one hand, or tobear down upon the top portion of the can with one hand, preferably the left hand of the operator, while inserting and moving a can opener about the periphery of the top portion of the can as indicated in Fig. 1, this procedure is always dangerous and has resulted in serious accidents to the operator, said operator being cut by the partially sheared portion of Specification of Letters Patent.
I Application filed December 19', 1921. Serial no. 523,385: 1
This invention relates to canholder de vices which are adapted tobe used 1n con- Patented Aug.
the can and by the slipping of the opening device. f H
My invention consists in providing means: whereby the can may be'firmly held in a pre-.
determined position in-thef operation of w opening such can with theusu'al can opener, and in Fig. 1 of the drawing,l have shown for illustrative purposes a can 5 the top 6 of said figure, and at 8 I have shown my imwhich is adapted to be opened suitable can opening device 7 partially indicated in proved holding device, said device compris v ing separate similarly formedjaw members 9.
The jaw members are preferably stamped U from sheet metal'and comprise an a proximate semi-circularpo'rtion 1'0 atone end of which is a handle member ll'which extends at an angle to the semi-circularportion 10 and the other end of which is provided with an aperture ia In practice, a chai'njor link member 13fconiposed of a plurality of separate links14 is secured to one of the jaw members 9 by a loop 15 passed through the aperture 12 in the end of said jaw member, and the other end of said chain is provided with an attaching device 16 comprising a loop which passes through the aperture 12in the other of said jaw members, and said attaching device is also provided with a hook shaped portion 17 which is adapted to pass through the loops of the links 15 of the chain, or the loop 15in adjusting the relative position of the jaw members 9 to one an other. I
the semi-circular portions thereof, are provided'with teeth or projections 18 which are by the device may grasp and hold a can or the like of predetermined dimensions,or as shownin Fig. 1 of thedr'awi'ng the chain may be fully extended or the full capacity of the device used, and said chain and-:jaw.
members 9 are passed around the can and the.
handle members 11 are forced together by i one hand of an operator, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, to firmly grasp; and
hold. the can in predetermined position. It
will be understood that the grasping device;
'Theinner faces of the jaw members 9, or 9 f may be moved about the can circumferentially thereof at intervals in the operation of opening the can by simply releasing the pressure on the handle members 11 and shiftingvthe device on said can.
While I have shown and described the device as specifically designed for use in holding cans of the class described containing; preserved fruits, vegetables, soups, milk and the like, it will be understood that the de vice may also be used in opening screw caps or'closure devices of Mason jars and the like, and it will also be apparent that while I have shown certain details 01"- construction for carrying my invention into effect, that I am not necessarily limited to these details and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrilicin its advantages.
l-laving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A can holding device of the class de scribed comprising two similar sheet metal jaw members, said jaw members comprising semi-circular portions provided at one end with handle members projecting at an angle thereto and the other ends of said semi-circular portions being provided with apertures, a chain the ends of which are passed through the apertures ofsaid jaw members for securing said jaw members together, and a hook-shaped device at one end of the chain and adapted to be detachably connected with the separate links of the chain for adjusting the relative position of said aw members.
2. A can holder of the class described comprising two similar jaw members, said jaw members being provided at one end with handle members, means for permanently and adjustably connecting the other ends of said aw members the ends of said aw members being apertured, chain the ends of which pass through the apertures of said jaw members for permanently connecting the same and one end of said chain being provided with a catch device adapted to engage the separate links of the chain for adjusting the relative position of said jaw members.
A can holder of the class described comprising two similar jaw members, said jaw members being provided at one end with handle members and at the other end thereof with apertures, a flexible member the ends of which are secured in the apertures of said jaw members, and means at one end of said member adapted to engage predetermined portions of the flexible member for adjustably connecting said jaw members,
In testimony that I claim. the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 17th day of December, 1921.
