-CUFF BUTTON.
FILED DEc.15. 1921.
IHM.,
ATTO RNEY Patented Feb. 5, 1923.
JOSEPH NOVAK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CUFF BUTTON.
Application filed December 15, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH NovAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cuff buttons and more particularly to a device which is' designed to hold a shirt cuff in its proper shape and in adjusted positions along the arm of the user thereby permitting him to pull up his shirt sleeve to any desired height Aon his arm at which `Joint the cuff will remain until again pulled down.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cuff button or link as specied which comprises a cuff button having a tape carrying roller attached thereto which carries a tape adapted for connection with a second button, the said tape being urged upon the roller by means of a spring so as to always draw the buttons towards each other and maintain the free edges of the cuff in proper relation and also t0 maintain the cuff tightly against the arm when the cuff is moved upwardly on the arm of the wearer.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a View showing the improved cuff link applied.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2f-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the improved culf link or button showing the tape extended.. r
Fig. 4 is a detail section through the spring roller construction.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed, the cuff buttons 1 and 2 comprises heads 3 which may be of any desired design and eachof which has a loop 4 connected thereto in any suitable manner, the said loop being constructed to provide a neck 5 for positioning in the but- 50, ton hole of a shirt cuff, while the major portion of the loop will be shaped to prevent its accidental insertion through the cuff button hole. The loop 4 of the button 1 has a spring roller 6 attached thereto to which serial No. 522,571.
a strip 7 of any suitable type of fabric preferably grosgrain ribbon is attached. The spring 6 has its end 6a inserted through the loop 4 and its end 6b inserted in a suitable opening in the roller 6 to provide the proper tension to the roller for rolling the strip 7 thereon. The strip 7 of fabric has hooks 8 upon its free end for engagement with the loop 4 of the button 2 to connect the buttons 1 and 2 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings in such manner as to urge them Atowards each other and yet permit connected spreading movement of the buttons when necessary. It will be seen, from the foregoing' description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing that as the cuff is moved upwardly on the arm of the wearer the tape 7 will wind from the spring roller 6, permitting the cuff to t about the arm, and that the tension of the spring will urge the buttons 1 and 2 towards each other in such manner as to cause the cuff to grip the arm sufficiently to hold the cuff in adjusted positions.
It is, of course, to be understood that the` invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in other relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in. any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a cuff link, a pair of buttons, a flexible strip having one end detachably connected to one of said buttons, a spring roller carried by the other of said buttons, said flexible strip connected to said spring roller for winding thereon.
2. In a cuff link, a pair of buttons, a loop connected to each button, a strip having one end connected to one of the loops and a spring actuated device for winding the strip around the other loop.
3. In a cuff link, a pair of cuff buttons, a spring roller carried by one of said buttons, a strip of fabric connected to said spring roller and adapted to be wound thereon by action of the roller, and hooks on the free end of said strip of fabric and adapted to engage the other of said buttons.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOSEPH NOVAK.
