warn-:1) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LINGERIE CLASP.
Application filed October 20, 1924. Serial No. 744,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA DEE FEL- Lows, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of South Pasadena, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lingerie Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to a lingerie clasp adapted to hold together the shoulder straps of ladies undergarments upon the shoulder, and by means of an auxiliary ball and socket snap member sewed on the outer garment, to maintain the clasp in proper position at all times.
As is well known, much annoyance results from slipping of the ordinary clasp with its contained straps from the shoulder down onto the arm, and to prevent this I have invented the novel device hereinafter set forth.
Its objects are to provide a clasp of simple and inexpensive type that will securely hold the two or more shoulder straps of as many undergarments together and to quickly and easily attach such a clasp to the under side of the outer garment in such a manner that it may be readily detached when necessary. To accomplish these objects I have designed a clasp of a novel type, and an auxiliary strip of metal adapted to be sewed on the under side of an outer garment and removably fixed to the clasp by means of multiple snaps. By such a combination the clasp may be detached from the auxiliary member at will, or may be opened to allow the shoulder straps to be drawn out while still held fast by the snaps to the outer garment. Or. the clasp may be detached from the auxiliary member and other auxiliary members provided on other outer garments be snapped 'into the clasp.
The construction and operation of my invention will be readily understood by examination of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my clasp in open position. and shows an auxiliary member adapted to be attached to the clasp by means of snap fasteners.
Figure 2 is a similar view to that of Figure 1. with the clasp in closed position and auxiliary member attached thereto.
Figure 3 is a lan view of the top. arm of the clasp in t e direction of the arrow shown in Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar numerals indicate identical parts in all of the figures: I
1 indicates the clasp proper, formed of flat metal stock and bent U shaped to afford approximation of ing purposes.
11 indicate the upper and lower arms respectively of clasp 1.
2 indicates the outer end of arm 1, formed to provide an upwardly projecting loop; 5 indicates a longitudinal cut in the dimal end of arm 1 to provide two lips, 3-4:, formed to engage loop 2 on either side in clasping action; 66 indicate perforations through member 1 adapted to receive spherical knobs 88 of auxiliary member 7 I 7 indicates an auxiliary member adapted to be sewed to the under side of an outer garment. and is provided with multiple projecting spherical knobs 88 for snapping action into perforations 6-6 of member 1, and further provided with multiple perforations 99 adapted for sewing member 7 onto a garment:
10-1O indicate resilient tongues, cut longitudinally in arm 1 and variously directed, the same being adapted to receive knobs 8-8 between their crescentically formed ends in snapping action.
It will be noted that any number of outer garments may be equipped with these auxiliarv members, 7-7. all adapted to coincide and fit into arm 1', and that when attached thereto clasp 1 must necessarily be held in the desired position on the shoulder, without danger of slipping in either forward, backward or lateral direction.
My clasping means for holding distal ends of arms 11" in closed position is particularly novel and strong. Arm 1 is slit longitudinally at its end, 5, to provide two lips the ends thereof for claspof equal width, 3-4. One of these lips, 8, is bent forwardly and downwardly to enthe outer surface of loop 2 of arm 1"; while the other lip, 4, is bent downwardly and backwardly in reversed S shape to enga the inner surface of said loop 2.
fills double acting claspmg means has special novel anduseful advantages over any known to the inventor. It is more pos1- tive in action because bendingl of elther arm 1 or'l could not destroy t clasping action, since wea ening of friction of 11p 3 on loop 2, for instance, would automatically increase friction of 11p 4 on loop 2, and vice versa. To break the catch, however, it is but necessary to press the finger between arms 11 near the distal ends thereof, whereon resiliency of lips 3 and 4.- will readily allow detachment of one arm from the other. 7
Having thus disclosed my invention I claim as new and desire to obtain Letters Patent of the United States upon claims 1. A clasp of the character disclosed struck from flat metal stock and formed U shaped to provide two a proximately parellel arms, the lower of em arms terminating in an upwardly pro ecting loop, the upper arm being slit longitudinally to prov1de two lips at the distal end thereof; one of said lips being bent to engage the outer curvature of said loop, the other 11p bent to engage the rearward or inner curvature of said loop, said lips being adapted to coact with said loop in clasping action.
2. A lingerie clasp of the character dis- -closed, comprising a U sha ed body struck from fiat metal stock, the ree ends thereof adapted to coact in clasping action; one arm of said body being provided with multiple sockets by means of resilient tongues struck in the body thereof; and an auxiliar member provided with multiple pro ecti0ns adapted to coact with said sockets in removable snapping action.
3. A lingerie clasp of the character dise strength of to engage the outward curvature 0 'closed, struck from flat mew .t'mk and bent U shaped to provide an upper and a lower arm, the free ends of said arms being provided with releasable clasping means; the upper arm being provided with multiple tongues cut longitudinally therein and formed crescentically at their free ends to constitute a resilient socket between an opposed pair of the same; said sockets ing adapted to receive spherical knobs in snap-,
ping action; and an auxiliary member adapted to be sewn on a garment and provided with projecting spherical knobs adapted to coact with said sockets in snapping action. Q
4. A lingerie clasp of the character disclosed, comprising a U shaped metal body with two ap roximately of said arms ing forme at its end into an upwardly projecting loop; the other arm being slit longitudinally at its free end to provide two lips, one of the same bein bent said loop, the other lip being bent to engage the inward curvature of sald loop, said lips coacting in clasping engagement with said loop; the upper arm of said body being further provided with multiple tongues cut longitudinally therein and variously directed, the same being crescentically formed at their free ends to provide a resilient arallel arms, one
socket between any opposing pair thereof, said sockets being adapted to receive spherwitnesses.
