IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE FRONTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 144,459, dated November 11, 1873; application-filed August 4, 1873.
' invented a new and useful Improvement in Grate and Fire-Place Fronts, of which the following is a speciiication:
The invention consists in novel means for holding an ornamental tile-front for fire-places in its proper position, as hereinafter described.

A is a frame made of cast metal, consisting of two uprights, extending from the hearth to the top or cross-piece of the fire-place. These uprights and top piece form the frame of the front, and to make it more ornamental we conne, on the face of such frame, tile, or marble, or composition slabs, marked in the drawing B. This tile or other material may consist of pieces of any color or style of ornamentation, and is confined to the frame by means of the border moldings C C, as seen in the crosssection. The outer edges of these moldings are lush with the outer ilanges D D of the frame. The inner edges lap onto the tile or slab, as seen, so as to securely hold it in pla-ce.
E represents bolts, which are cast into the moldings, or attached in any other suitable manner, which pass through the frame with the screw-nuts Gr and washer H thereon, by which the moldings are held to theframe. These moldings are consequently removable,
so that the tile or slabs may be renewed or changed, as may be desired. I represents one of a series of openings in the frame, through which cement may be attached to the tile, to prevent it from moving laterally.
Byholding the tile or slab with' the bandmoldings G C an unbroken tile or marble front is made around the grate or rire-place, adding greatly to its general appearance and value. This mode applies to the bottom or base of the grate or fender with equal advantage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The frame A l), and the border-molding C, held thereto by bolt and nut, both constructed and the two combined to retain a slab, B, in place, in the manner and for the purpose described.
