WALTER SCOTT JACKSON OF BIRMINGHAM,
FIREPLACE- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907;
Application filed December 4,1905. Serial No- 290,286.
To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WALTER ScorT JACK- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fireplaces, of which the'follo wing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fireplaces, the object of the invention being to provide a sectional construction of fireplaces wherein the parts are adapted to be readily connected and disconnected to permit the same to be set up for use and disconnected for storage or transportation.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the fireplaces set up for use; Fig. 2 is a vertical front to rear section thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the side pieces of the frame Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the guards or deflectors; and Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the chimney, looking toward the rear of the fireplace.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the front of the fireplaces, which comprises the spaced depending standards or legs 2 connected at their upper ends by a transverse breast p ece 3, said breast piece being formed or provided with the usual ornamental hood 4, overhanging the opening above the grate.
5 denotes the base, provided with the usual guard or fender rail 6 and which is formed independently of the front 1 and may be secured thereto or to the hearth of the fire place in any preferred manner.
The legs or standards 2 of the front 1 are formed upon the rear face thereof with ribs or flanges 7 provided with receiving seats or recesses 8 preferably extending transversely therethrough at an angle to receive angularly disposed locking lugs. 9 formed upon the side pieces 10 of the body of the fireplace, whereby said side pieces are detachably secured to the front 1. At their rear edges the side pieces 10 are formed with inwardly extending flanges 11 provided with inclined seat recesses 12 to receive angularly disposed looking lugs 13 on a back piece 14, which completes the formation of the frame, this construction adapting the back to be disconnected by a forward movement to release the locking lugs from the recesses and an upward movement to withdraw it from between the side pieces 10. plate adjacent to the lower end thereof a flange 15 is formed to serve as asupport for the rear cross bar 16 of the grate 17, which grate is provided with the usual upwardly extending side bars 18 connected by the transverse fender bars 19, said side bars being formed in their rear edges with notches or recesses 20 to engage studs or looking pins 21 formed on the inner edges of the legs 2 of the frame front 1, whereby the grate is detachably mounted upon the frame.
Arranged upon the upper ends of the side pieces 10 are guards or deflectors 22, each in the form of a cast plate provided in its lower edge with a V-shaped recess 23 adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the side piece 10, which latter is preferably tapered to a V edge, as shown at 24, to seat within said recess and support the guard or deflector securely in position thereon. The outer wall of the V-shaped portion 24 of each side piece 10 is formed with an obliquely disposed dowel seat or socket 25 to receive a dowel pin 26 projecting from the base portion, of the guard or deflector, whereby the latter is supported in an outwardly inclined or oblique position to extend laterally beyond the side piece. The upper half of the outer faceof each guard or deflector is cut away on a bevel, as shown at 27, to adapt it to engage the inflaring breast portion of the chimney to close the spaces between the chimney, as shown in Fig. 7, wall and side pieces 10 at the top of the fireplace to prevent refuse or particles of combustion from passing out at the top and falling in rear of the fireplace and between the same and the wall of the chimney. If desired, each guard or deflector may further be provided with a short bottom extension 28 to abut against the breast portion of the front 1 to increase the bearing and supporting surface of said deflector.
It will be seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the constructions provide a sectional fireplace which may be conveniently set up for use and readily taken down for storage or transportation, and which also may be economically manufactured. It will, of course, be understood that the elements of the structure are preferably composed of castings, and that the exposed parts may be ornamented in any suitable manner.
On the front face of the back W: Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
I 1. A fireplace comprising a front piece provided upon its rear side with parallel vertical ribs formed with transverse slots, side pieces bearing at their forward edges against the front piece and inner faces of the ribs and provided with laterally rojecting lugs engaging said slots, said si e pieces being provided at their rear ends with inturned flanges formed with slots, and a back piece resting against the inner faces of said flanges and provided on its rear face with looking lugs engaging the slots therein.
2. A fireplace comprising a front, a back and sides having a detachable interlocking connection, the upper ends of the sides being beveled to a'V-edge, and guards or deflectors provided in their lower edges with V-shaped recesses, said guards being obliquely supported upon the V-shaped edges of the sides, and interconnecting means for supporting said guards in position.
3. A fireplace comprising a front, a back and sides having a detachable interlocking connection, the up er ends of the sides being beveled or tapered to form V-seats, guards having recessed lower edges resting on said seats and provided with beveled outer faces, and means for detachably securing the guards in osition.
n testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER SCOTT JACKSON.
