tartar FFICEQ GEORGE A. WVAY, OF MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED WOOD AND COAL STOVE GRATE.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No 355,849, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed August 3, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleville, county of Barry, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Combined \Vood and Coal Stove Grate, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct an adjustable front grate for stoves, so adapted that it maybe used for either wood or coal.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of the grate in a stove, with the stove in vertical section; Fig. 2, a rear perspective of the grate enlarged from that shown in Fig. 1, and showing the grate adapted for wood-stoves; Fig. 3, same as Fig. 2, with additional supportingbars, forming a base-grate for use in burning coal; and Fig. 4 is a broken detail in enlarged perspective, hereinafter explained.
Referring to the letters marked on the drawings, D represents a grate for the front of the stove, back of the front inclosure or wall of the stove. Heretofore these grates have been made with the stove as a fixture thereto, and when one became burned out a new one had to be supplied from the maker especially adapted for the given style of stove.
My improved grate makes it possible to supply them as an article of manufacture to be adjusted to any style of stove.
Any desired style of open-work for the grate may be adopted.
Dovetail lugs are cast on the grate, forming a dovetail recess, 0, into which are detachably and adj ustably inserted the upright bars of the L-shaped support a. Vhen used for woodstoves, two supports, a, are used, as in Figs. 1 and 2, to support the grate in an upright position, and at the desired height, according to the size of the stove.
, Grooves e are formed in the uprights of the L-supports, into which a key, 0*, is inserted to lock the grate the desired height. These grooves also serve to facilitate breaking off the upper end of the supports, if desired, to conform them to different sizes of stoves. The
- groovest at the ends of the grate-bars are for Serial No. 173,336. (No model.)
grate, or the integral and adjustable bars may alternate with each other, as in Fig. 3, the latter being preferable to facilitate casting; or the end adjustable L-bars may be dispensed within some instances, thus leaving the upright grate and the base-bars all integral. This style is used for coal, the lower bars serving to support the coal and give a draft beneath. In this use of the invention the end adjustable bars would set on the shelf each side of the ash-pan of the stoveinstead of down in the ash-pan, as at a 0/, Fig. 1, as when used for wood.
In Fig. 8 it will be observed there are two recesses, c, at each end of the grate D, to adjustably receive the support a. One or more may be employed. The object of more than one such recess at each end is that some ashpans of stoves are wider than others, and in some instances the bottoms of the pans are rough or hubby in places, and the support might not sit firm unless it were adjusted to a smooth place.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. Astove-grate consisting of L-shaped bars, and a front section provided with recesses in which the vertical portion of the L-shaped bars is fitted, substantially as set forth.
2. Astove-grateconsistingofL-shapedbars,
and a front section provided with integral basebars at right angles thereto, and having between the latter-named bars recesses in which the vertical portion of the L-shaped bars is fitted, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the front grate provided with recesses to removably receive the vertical arms of the Lsupports, the L-supports having the key'grooves in the vertical bars, and keys detachably inserted in the grooves between the grate and the vertical bars, whereby the wedging contact of the keys with grooves and grate locks the L-supports, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. A. WAY.
giro. D. B. HALL.
