OTTO P. ELTERICII AND G. OTTO ELTERIOII, OF NEIVARK, NEWV JERSEY, AS- SIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO CLEMENS I'IEITEMEYER, OF SAME PLACE.
MANTEL FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,003, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed May 1, 1888. Serial No. 272,530. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OTTO P. ELTERIOH and G. OTTO ELTERICH, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Mantels for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved mantel for heating and other stoves, by means of which the mantel of a stove can be constructed of a number of tiles or glass plates, which together form a strong and substantial wall without any intermediate joints for the individual tiles or plates; and the invention c011- sists of a mantel for stoves composed of a number of individual tiles or glass plates, which are provided at the back with a dovetailed dowel and supported by a layer of suitable cement on a frame consisting of intersecting wires or rods, said rods and dowels be ing embedded into the layer of cement, so as to support the tiles or plates in position, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of our improved mantel for heating-stoves Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, drawn on a larger scale; and Figs. 3 and at are respectively a vertical transverse section and a rear view of a single tile or plate, drawn on a still larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the supporting-frame of our improved mantel-tile for heating and other stoves. This frame is made according to the size and shape of the side wall of the mantel and composed of an outer frame of castor wrought iron bars a and of intersecting wires or rods b, which form a stiff grating.
To the frame A is applied a number of clay tiles or glass plates B, each of which is provided at its back wit-h a dovetailed central dowel d, which, together with the rods 01' wires, are embedded into a layer 0, of a suitable cement, of a thickness equal to the thickness of the dovetailed dowels (Z, as shown in Fig.
3. This layer of cement 0 supports the tiles or glass plates 13 firmly in position on the frame A, and furnishes thereby a mantel wall or tile of nicely-jointed tiles or plates, without requiring the cementing of the individual tiles or plates at their joints, whereby not only a much better appearance but also a stronger and more durable mantel Wall or tile for heating-stoves is obtained. The mantel-tiles that form the side walls of the stove are connected by suitable angle-irons at the corners, so that a very ornamental mantel is obtained, which is used in place of the cast-iron or sheet-metal stove-bodies heretofore in use.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A mantel for stoves, consisting of a metallic supporting frame or grating, tiles or glass plates provided with dovetailed dowels at the back and arranged in front of said supporting-frame, and a layer of cement that 7c unites the dowels at the back of the tiles with the supporting frame or grating, substantially as set forth.
2. A mantel for stoves, consisting of a metallic supporting frame or grating, a number 7 5 of tiles or glass plates, each provided with a dovetailed dowel at the back, said dowels being located at the front of the supportingframe, and with dowels projecting into the spaces formed between the strips of the grat- 8o ing, and a layer of refractory cement embedding the grating and dowels at the rear of the tiles for uniting the frames and tiles, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO P. ELTERIOH. G. OTTO ELTERIOH.
