SAFETY HAIR-STRAIGHTENING DEVICE.
Application filed September 23, 1921., Serial No. 502,614.
T 0 all w hem it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN 8. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Hair- Straightening Devices, of which the followin is a specification.
lly invention relates to improvements in devices for straightening curly hair, and the present invention is an improvement over my U. S. Letters Patent issued on the 19th day of July, 1921, under No. 1,384,906.
One of the important features of the present invention resides in the novel construction of the ironing member which is provided at one side with a series of transverse teeth which present a relatively long surface to the curly hair and are therefore eflicient in straightening said hair. Another feature of the ironing member resides in a plain smooth surface for application to the hair after the same has been treated with the toothed portion of the ironing! member.
Other features will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device with some f the parts partly broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail showing how the ironing member may beadjusted in its holder to present either the toothed surface or the plain surface for use.
Fig. 4 is an inverted detail perspective view of the ironing member.
Referring now in detail to the various parts, 2 designates a handle which is, preferably, made from a piece of coiled wire, s that said handle will not become heated during the heating of the ironing member 4. The ends of the wire handle 2 are incased in caps 6, which are ornamental in appearance and hold a shank 8 in assembled position with said handle 2. The shank 8 extends forwardly of the handle 2 and is provided with an upwardly projecting lug 10 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
A bifurcated member consisting of two elements 12 is Secured to the shank 8 by a rivet 14 and a set screw 16, which latter extends loosely through openings in one of said bifurcated members and the shank 8 and is threaded into the other bifurcated member, see dotted lines Fig. 3. By loosening the set screws 16 the forward ends of the elements 12 may be sprung in opposite directions to admit the axis 18 of the ironlng member 4 to holes 20 in the forward ends of said elements 12. This operation also admits either lugs 22 or 24 on the ends of the ironing member 4 to holes 26 in the elements 12.
The ironing member 4 is provided at one side with. a series of transverse teeth 28 spaced apart to admit the curly hair to be straightened. The ironing member 4 is also provided with a plain Smooth surface 30 to be run over the hair after the same has been straightened by the teeth 28.
The hot ironing member 4 is prevented from coming into direct contact with the scalp by a comb 32 having oppositely-disposed teeth 34, which extend below the ironing member 4 as disclosed by Fig. 1. The comb teeth 34 as well as the rear ends 35 of the teeth 28 are curved rearwardly in such manner as to pick up the curly hair and direct it into the grooves between the teeth 28 when the device is drawn backwardly through the hair.
In order to prevent the comb 32 from becoming heated during the heating of the ironing member 4, said comb 32 is mounted upon an arm 36 secured at its rear end by a pivot 38 to lugs 40 projecting upwardly from the rear ends of the elements 12. This construction enables the comb 32 to be swung upwardly and backwardly away from the ironing member 4 during heating of the same. When the comb 32 is swung in position over the ironing member 4 the arm 36 contacts and is sup-ported by a shoulder 42 on the lug 10 and secured in position upon said shoulder 42 by a pivoted latch 44, the forward end of which is adjusted into engagement with the hook 10.
In practice when the toothed side of the ironing member 4 is to be used it is adjusted on its axis 18 to bring the teeth 28 into operative position and the lugs 22 in position to enter the holes 26 in the elements 12, which latter are sprung apart as shown by Fig. 3, for that purpose. The elements 12 are then permitted to spring toward each other to engage and hold the comb 4, and are reliably secured against the forward portion of the shank 8 by the set screw 16.
When the smooth surface 30 of the iromng member 4 is to be used the latter is rotated to bring the lugs into coincidence with the holes 26 of the elements 12, which are manipulated in the same manner as above described to receive the lugs 22.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have produced a hair straightening device in which the parts can be readily assembled and adjusted to their respective positions, and by providing the ironing member 4 with the relatively long teeth 28, said ironing member will prove very efficient in straightening curly hair.
Vhile I have shown and described the preferred construction,; arrangement and combination of parts, I reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described consisting of an ironing member having a plain surface and a toothed surface, and a supporting member having a handle thereto and in which said ironingmember is adjustably mounted so that either its plain surface or toothed surface may be presented for use.
2. A device of the character described consisting of an ironingmember having a plain surface and a toothed surface, a supporting member having a handle thereto and in which said ironing member is adjustably mounted so that either its plain surface or toothed surface may be presented. for use, and a comb associated with said ironing member and provided with teeth which proje'ct below the surface of the ironing member.
3. A device of the character described consisting of an ironing member having a plain surface and a toothed surface, a supporting member having a handle thereto, an axis to the ironing member which is journaled in said supporting member, so that said ironing member may be adjusted to present either its plain surface or toothed surface, and means associated with the supporting member and the ironing member to secure the latter in either of its adjusted positions. I
4. A device of the character described consisting of an ironing member having a plain surface and a toothed surface, a supporting member having a handle thereto and in which said ironing member is adj ustably mounted so, that either its plain surface or toothed surface may be presented for use, a comb associated with the ironing member, an arm carrying said -comb at one end and pivoted at its opposite end to the supporting member, a hook on the supporting member provided with a shoulder upon whichthe arm is adapted to rest, and a latch mounted on the arm and adapted to engage said hook to hold the arm in engagement with the shoulder. y
In testimony whereof, I. aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN S. LEE.
