Be it known that I, ELMIRA PACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, has invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.

rIhis invention relates to toilet articles and has special reference to electrically heated toilet articles such as combs, curling tongs and the like.

One important object or" the invention is the production of an improved general construction for devices of this character.

A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of heating element in such devices.

A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of heating element particularly adapted for use with an improved form of toothed articles such as combs.

With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specilically claimed.

In'the embodiments of the invention herein illustrated, and which are to be taken as typical of a variety of analogous devices, a suitable hollow handle 10 of wood, fiber, celluloid or other preferred material is provided. From this handle projects a tubular shank l1 and within the handle at the end opposite the shank is located one part of connector l2 which can be joined by the other part of such a connector (not shown) to a suitable source of electric current. From this connector extends a wire loop formed of resistance wire and constituting the heating element, one part o f the wire being helically coiled as at 13 while the wire 1s peclcation of Letters Patent.

brought straight back from the remote end of the helix to the connector as at 14.

In the form of the device shown in Figs. l and 2 the outer end of the shank is eX panded to form a head l5 and pivotally conneet-ed to the shank is a bent lever 16 carrying at its outer end a head l?, the two heads having their confronting faces flat so that they may properly press a lock or ringlet of hair. In order normally to hold the heads togetherl a spring 1S is employed while a thumb piece 19 serves' to receive pressure from the thumb whenever it is desired to separate these heads.

In the form of the device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 a series of teeth 2O project from thev shank and each tooth is hollow as shown at 21, the hollow of each tooth communicating with the hollow of the shank so that the helix coil which lies opposite each respective tooth may be extended down into the tooth as at 22.

`With such a construction as this it isapparent that any suitable metal may be utilized in forming the devices and, while it is preferred to use aluminum, either plated or plain, iron, copper or any other metal may be used and the same may be left plain, polished, plated or ornamented as may be found desirable.

It will be particularly noted that the series connected loops extending into the hollow comb teeth heat the teeth in a highly advantageous manner since the heat is practically rmiforin throughout the length of the tooth and consequently produces a better effect, as for instance in combing damp hair to dry it the points of the teeth do not get chilled as is the case where solid teeth are employed.

There has thus been provided a simple' and eiiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invent-ion without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In an electrically heated toilet article, a hollow shank, a series of hollow comb common axis, said eonifolntions being of eiiculai' shape and uniform size, the adj aeent series of oonvolutions being connected together by single oonvolutions each having one side extended into a respective tooth substantially' in an elongated V-shaped loop with the plane passing through the sides of the V at right angles to the axis o1x the heating helix.
