andstraightening the hair of persons of the Negro race and especially designed for womens hair.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means so that a single handle can be detachably fixed to either end of the comb, that it may be used for combing and straightening the hair on either the right, or left side of the head.
A still further object of the invention is to provide substantially V-shaped teeth, in cross-section, to form a V-shaped hair passage between adjacent teeth to allow the hairs to spread after passing out of the passages formed between adjacent teeth.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in'the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and finally pointed out in the claim hereto ap-' pended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1, is a rear elevation of my combined comb and hair straightener with handle attached for combing and straightening the hair upon the rightside of the head. i p
Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a view taken on line 3-3 of F'g. 4, is an enlarged detail of a plurality of comb teeth taken on line M of Fig. 3,
showing the converging hair passages between adjacent teet I Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are approximately full size of the comb, the reference character 1 indicates a Application filed-December 30,1920; "serialf-Nofi 434gll 0;'
cast' metallic pressing" bar, :preferably brass:
SpecificationofLetters a e, ,Pgtt'ntefl 1 5, i
The pressing bar- 1 isprovided atone; end I with an interiorl'y screw ith-readed socket 2 and at itsopposite end with 14 indicates a suitable handle E erably from a material such; as wood, hard rubber, or other equivalent material, which is a non-conductor, of heat. The handle 4 p is provided with a metallic shank5, which is suitably fixed to one end of the handle 4:.
The shank 5 is provided with a screw threaded stem 6 for engagement in either of the screw threaded sockets 2 or 3, of the pressing bar 1, of the comb, as is manifest.
Extending from the loweredge of the pressing bar 1 are a, plurality of combteeth 1 7 which are suitably curved longitudinally to provide a convex front surface 8 and a convex rear surface 9. i
It will be observed that'the side faces 10 of each comb tooth converge from the front curved surface 8 of each tooth 7 to the rear curved face 9 forming a hairpassage .12
which is wider at its rear end than at itsloosen and spread as it leaves the'passage between the teeth when the combis being drawn through the hair. This has a tendency to make the hair fluffy and free from snarls. I a
The rear face of the pressing bar 1 is suitably curved transversely of the bar, to provide a convex pressing, ironing, or hair straightening surface 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. When the comb is used for hair straightening purposes, the pressing bar 1 is first heated in any suitable manner, as is manifest.
In the use of the hereindescribed device,
the comb is run through the hair so that itis followed up by thebar 1, and the rear convexed face 13 of the bar 1 is drawn tightly against the hair thereby pressing and 1 ironing the hair and straightening the same as the hair isbeing combed. The handle, or hand-piece-tis interchangeable so that it can be attached to either end of the pressing bar 1 of the comb, therebyproviding either a right or left hand comb, as desired, with but a single handle.
, From the foregoing'description, it is evi- 55 anyinternally screw threadedssocket .3.
dent that I provide a simple and eficient means for straightening the hair during the combing operation thereof and that the handle can be changed to either end of the comb for right, or left hand use.
The many advantages of. the hereindescribed invention will readilysuggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the exact details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations' and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and the terms of thefollowing claim, hence I Wish it to be understood that I reserve the right to make any such changes, or modifications as may fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claim when fairly construed.
WhatI claim is:
A comb comprising a pressing bar having a transverse convex rear face, and provided with a screw threaded socket at either end of'th'e bar, spaced teeth having side faces converging from the front face of each tooth to the rear face thereof to provide a hair passage between adjacent teeth that Will be Wider at its rear end than at its front end to permit the hairs to gradually spread apart in leaving the spaces between
