y EDWARD GREEN AND EMILY M. soon, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
'- 00MB; 2 P
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD D. GREEN and EMILY M. Soorr, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to combs and particularly of the kind used for hair or wool.
It is an object of the invention to provide a comb which is adapted to straighten out the curls in wool or hair.
A further object embraces the provision of a comb with a back adapted to be heated andbto impart the heat to the teeth of the com A further object includes the provision of means for internally tion of the same.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a handle to which the improved comb is detachably secured and may be exchanged for a comb of ordinary Or modified construction.
To the accomplishment of the objects stated and others that will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the means hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a side view of a comb, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the comb equipped with internal electrical heating means, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a comb adapted to be heated by an external source of heat.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a handle of ordinary construction provided with an axial'bore for the passage of wires 2, 3, which may be connected to a lamp socket in the well known manner. To the handle 1 a shank or stem 4 is secured either by threaded engagement therewith or by permanent attachment thereto, and the forward portion of said shank is enlarged to constitute a socket member 5, and said memberis interiorly threaded at 5 and formed with a cylindrical seat 5", the socket member being adapted for the reception of a reduced threaded extension 6 of the comb. The latter, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a hollow back portion 7 and a plurality of spaced teeth 8, which, as shown, may be heating the back por- Specification of Letters Patent.

formed integral with the back or if preferred may be constructed separately and properly secured to the back.
Incased in the back 7 is an electrical heating element 9, having a plug member 9', which fits into the socket member 5, on the seat 5", serving when the reduced threaded extension of the comb is screwed into the threaded portion 5, of the socket to hold the heating elements centrally of the bore in the back of the comb and spaced from the side walls thereof. When the parts are screwed together the end of the reduced extension 6, will engage a portion of the upper face of the plug 9', and, in assembled relation of the comb parts the plug member 9 is placed in contact with the wires 2 and 3 to connect the heater with the source of electric energy.
From the foregoing it is obvious that when the circuit through the wires 2, 3 is closed, heat will be generated in the interior of the back member 7 which heat is transmitted by conduction to the teeth 8 and given ofi' to the hair or wool so that in the combing operation curls are straightened.
In Fig. 3 a modified comb is shown comprising a solidback portion 10 formed integral with teeth 11. The back 8 terminates in a reduced threaded extension 12, adapted to be screwed into the socket member 5. When the comb, shown in Fig. 3 is used, electric heating is dispensed with and it is intended to heat the back of the comb by an external source of heat, such as a gas flame.
The improved comb is intended to be used for straightening the curls of the hair es pecially of colored people and also to comb wool. Various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is therefore my intention of including all alterations constituting departures within the scope of the heating element adapted to be mounted on the socketseat, the reduced extension of said comb section ecleptecl for engagement with said plug for holding said heating element in said comb section and spaced from the WZLllS of the hollow back of said comb section.
fiopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents eaen, my afldressing the In testimony whereof We affix our signm tures in the presence of two Witnesses.
