ELECTRIC HAIR COMB AND HAIR STRAIGHTENING MEANS Filed Feb. 18,1932
H- GAndePs on INVENTOR- ATTORNEY- ELECTRIC HAIR 001m; AND HAIR" STRAIGHTENINGMEANS Patented Nov. 28, 1933 This invention relates to new and useful im-' provements in electrically heated combs used for straightening curly hair. j'
v It is'a well known human weakness that those who have straighthair often like to have'their hair artificially curled, while those who havev naturallywavy hair are sometime desirousof'.
having their hair straight. Tosatisfy the desire of the latter class there are available electrically heated combs for straightening curly hair.
The combs of this type now available aremade of some metal to resist heat, and provision is made to heat them electrically by means of a heating I I element housed in the hollow upper part of the comb.
When using this appliance, small portions of p the hair are first smoothened out by means of the teeth of the comb, and when the hair is in the desired conditionof smoothness heat is applied to it in order to fix and make lasting the smoothness previously obtained.
Such use of the present devices is not without inconvenience to the user, since the teeth of the comb form one body with the part containing the heating element, due to which the teeth attain approximately the same temperature as the hollow partcontaining the heating element. Accordingly, there is danger of burning the scalp with the hot teeth of the comb,
and the user cannot properly smoothen the hair.
before applying the heat.
My present invention obviates the difficulty described in the foregoing by thermally insulating the part containing the heating element from the teeth of the comb. With this arrangement the upper part of the comb may attain a high temperature without appreciably heating up the teeth, and thus the user may effectively smoothen the hair with the teeth of the comb before applythe heat for securing an approximate permanency of the condition ofthe hair thus arranged or straightened out.
Another advantage of the arrangement dis- 7 closed in this invention is that the comb proper is easily detachable from the rest of the appliance, thereby facilitatingsterilization of the said comb. This is a particularly desirable feature in barber shops or beauty parlors where the same device may be used by a largenumber of customers.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described; claimed, and illus- -trated in the accompanying drawing forming characters. 'of reference ind icate corresponding parts in all views, and in which;
part of this specification, 'and in whichlsimilar,

ing from the front.
Fig; 2'isa perspective view ofa metallicspa cef which may be used infconjuncticnwith the device]; Fig.3 is an enlarged cross-section taken along,-; line 3'-,-3 i'n'Fig. 1, and l Fig.,4 is a. cross sectional:viewfsimilarto 3, but. showing amodified arrangement.
In the accompanying illustrations 11 is a hollow housing, and inside this housing, electrically insulated therefrom, there is arranged a.
The said heating element The said handle ofconcealing A collar 16 is fastened to the handle 15, the said collar being formed with a protruding, substan- -tially square part 17. The comb properbears the J numeral 18, and it is supported by an-offset stem 0 -1' 19. The end of the said'stem is inserted into the square part 1'7 of the collar 16, and the c'onnec tion between the stem and the handle is completed by meansof thevmachine screw 20 which is vthreadedly connected to the collar 16. With this arrangement the comb part can be easily detached or attached to the handle for sterilization.
There is an air space 21 between'the housing:
heating element and the comb proper has to take placeby radiation-and not by convection as'is With this arrangement there will be a' consid containing the heating element and the comb,
clue to which any heat transmission betweenthe erable difference between the temperature of the housing 11 and the comb proper, therebygreatly increasing the usefulness of the appliance, and at the same time eliminating the danger of burning the users scalp. v At the time when the appliance is being put into use it may be desirable to heat up rapidly the comb proper to a moderate temperature. To achieve this end a metallic spacer 22 shown in Fig. 2 may be inserted into the space 21, the di- 05"- the 110.
, hand surface-'of'the housing 11 coming intocontact with the scalp. The purpose of' this added protection is to shield the scalp when the cornbis laid upon the head with the concave side up as preferred by some users.
It is obvious thatchanges may be made'in the form, construction and arrangement 'ofgthe' several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departingfrom thespirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to the construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
What Iclaim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of the United-States, is:
I 1. A device for straightening hair, comprising a housing. containing-an electric heating element and being-fastened'to a handle, a combattached to the latter by means of a. shank, and being thermally insulated: from the said'housing, the
teeth of the comb; having an upwardly extending portion shielding the rear of thesaid housing.
I t 2. A device for straightening hair, comprisinga housing containing an electric heating element and being fastened to a handle, acomb attached" to the latter bymeans of a shank, and being thermally insulated from the said housing, a
spacer adapted for insertion between the said housing andthe' comb proper, the said spacer being provided with a lug, whereby to adjust the 1atter.-
3. A device for straightening hair, comprising a housing containing an electricvheating, element and being fastenedto a handle, a combattached to the latter by] means of a shank, andbeing thermally'insulated from'the said housing,-the back of the housing being provided with a large convex surface, whereby to impart impressions upon. the hair;..
i 4. In adevice for straightening hair, the combination of an electric heating element, contained in a housing; with a comb arranged in spaced relation to the: latter,. the said comb having an elongatedhandle attached to the said housing, and a spacer formed with a concave upper surface and adapted for insertion betweenthesaid housing' and comb'proper; 1
5. A device for straighteninghair, comprising}:
a housing containing an electric" heating element and-being'fastenedito a handle, a'comb' attached to the latter by means of a shank, and-being thermally insulated from the saidfhousings the, v back of the housing being-provided with a large.-
exposed surface for impartingheatito the hair during treatment" of the latter.
