SAFETY HAIR STRAIGHTENING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 4, 1920 l fifi 9&0 Pmntsd July 19 MEL IKE/H6456. I jwmam' Emmi! filee,

SAFETY HSTGHTENING DEVICE.
Application filed teptember t, 1820. serial Ito.
To all whom it may concern." Be it known that I, EDWIN S. Lien, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and f useful Improvements Straightening Devices, ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hair straighteners, and one object is to provide a device of this character whlch may be either electrically or otherwise heated.
Another object is to provide a hair straightener in which it IS impossible to burn the scalp, and one in which the comb attachment can be adjusted away from the roller when the latter is heated over a flame, thus leaving said comb in a Another object is to provide a dev1ce which is pulled through the hair instead of pushed, thus giving a positive motion rather than an unsteady one. Another object is to, provide a multigrooved roller which has more heating surface than a plain roller, and tends to straighten the hair by causing 1t to pass through the grooves of the heated roller,
With the above and other objects in view, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the hair straightening device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. at is an end elevation of the device. In carrying out the invention, 1 provide a in Safety Hairwire handle 2, which is not so likely to be-.
come heated-as a solid handle. Said handle 2 is provided at its forward end with a cap 4:, having a forwardly pro ecting shank 6 which is bifurcated at its forward portion 8. designates a roller which is journaled upon a stationary shaft 12, secured 1n the bifurcated portion 8 by nuts 13. Said roller 10 is provided with peripheral grooves 14 through which the hair passes while being treated, the grooves 14 provlding greater heating surface and also tending to straighten the hair more efficiently than a plain roller. 15 designates an arcuate comb, having opdisposed teeth 16, which extend below the roller 10, so that the latter cannot come into contact with the scalp and burn the same. The comb teeth 16 are curved in such manner as to pick up the curly hair filpeciflcation of Letters Patent.

and divide it and then pass in through the grooves 14 of the roller 10. In order that the comb may not become hot, while the roller If) is being heated over a flame the 6 by means of a pin hen bein used, the comb 15 is held in lowered position by means of a turnbutton 22 swlveled in the shank 6, said turnbutton passing through a corresponding opening 23 in the arm 18 w ich supports the comb.
In order that the roller12 may be electrically heated it is provided with an interior heating coil 26 surrounding an insulating member 27, through which the shaft 12 extends. The terminals of the heating coil 26 are connected to insulated wires and 32, which extend through the shaft 12 and the handle 2 and connect with a coupling 34- adapted to be connected to any suitable source of current. The coupling 34 is fixed to a cap 36 secured to the rear end of the handle 2.. i
The operation briefly stated is as follows: When it is desired to straighten the hair, the device is electrically heated, if current is available, otherwise it may be heated over a flame, the comb being swung back so that it will not become heated with the roller 10. The comb 15 is then returned to operative position and secured by the turnbutton 22.
lihe device is then placed upon the users head and pulled backwardly and as it travels along the comb teeth pick up the hair, dividing it into small strands which are directed between the grooves 14 of the heated roller 10, which leaves the hair in a straight condition.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
-1. A device of the character described consisting of a roller, a shaft upon which said roller is journaled a handle associated with said roller and the shaft, and a comb associated with said handle and partly surrounding the periphery of the roller.
2. A device of the character described consisting of a roller having a multiple of peripheral grooves, a handle associated with said roller, and a comb associated with said handle and artly surrounding the periphery of the roller; the ends of the comb teeth being directed toward the handle to lift the hair into the grooves of the roller as the device is drawn over the head.
3. A device of the character described consisting of a roller adapted to be heated, a handle associated with said roller, :1 comb which is curved to extend partly around the roller, and a member movably connected to the handle and carrying the comb to remove the same from the immediate vicinity of the roller while the same is being heate 4. A device of the character described consisting of a roller adapted to be heated, a handle associated with said roller, a comb which is curved to extend partly around the roller, a-member movably connected to the handle'and carrying the comb to remove the same from the immediate vicinity of the roller while the same is being heated, and means for fastening said member from moving independently of the handle when the comb is in position around the roller.
5. A device of the character described consisting of a hollow roller, a shaft upon which said roller is journaled, a handle associated with said roller and the shaft, means I within the roller to heat the same, and a comb associated with said handle and partly surrounding the periphery of the roller.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
