1,625,487 Aprll 19, 1927. w MEYER HEATER FOR CURLING IRONS AND THE LIKE Filed July 22. 1925 6:5, I My 2 40;215:27 MQ f/MQ fit) Patented Apr. 19, 1927.
UNITED STATES WiLIilEiAM 'MEXER, or CHICAGO, ILLI NOI S.
HEATER FOR enumerates AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 22 This invention relates to an improved heater for curling irons and the like, and its objects are the provision of a generally improved and simplified device for delivering the proper amount of heat to the iron or irons to maintain them at a generally uniform temperature and against overheating and a device adapted forplural useby operators at opposite ends ordifferentpositions and in which theradiation loss is small and the current consumption relatively low.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: P s
Figure 1 is a perspective View of anembodiment of the invention showing a pair of irons in position'therei n; 1 t Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,-and
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 38 of Figure 2.
-The device shown comprises; a base 5 which may be of a suitable insulatingcomposition or material and has its undersurface recessed at 6 and 7. p
The heating element per se, comprises the usual or any suitable electric coil 8 in the form of a helically wound wire of proper characteristics. The wire or coilSis wound or wrapped helically upon a relatively thin metal tube 9 with a layer or wrapping 10 of mica or other suitable material between the coilor wire 8 and the surface of the tube 9 for insulating the coil electrically from the tube. The coil 8 may in turn be surrounded or enclosed externally by a layer 12 of heat insulating composition which may be put on in a plastic conditionerotherwise placed about the coil and which may be of any suitable material having the desired heat insulating characteristics. A
y The heating elementis enclosed in a housing 15. This housing 15 may be formed of suitable sheet metal rolled or otherwise shaped to form a central compartment 16 of generally circular cross section for surrounding the heating means and-a'pair of lateral or side compartments 17 and 18 extending longitudinally along opposite sides of the compartment .16 and having their in teriors in commu nieationwith the interior of the central compartment 16 throughopenings 20 extending longitudinally along the common sides of the compartment 17 and compartment '16 and compartment *18-and compartment 16, respectively, and formed,

exairiple, by leaving the opposite rolled .sidesof the compartment lb spaced the desired amount in the formation of thehous- The iopposite ends of the intermediate compartment 16 may extend beyondthe ends of the side. compartments 17 and 18, as indicated at 22 and the sides of these extend ingends 22mayrbe at least more nearly closed, as indicated at 23. The extending ends22fit snugly within the external flanges moved.
The cuppedportions 2 L also finish the opposite ends of the intermediate compartment and close the ends of the annular space between the tube 9 and the surrounding wall of'the housing. The-end brackets 25 may have angular feetsecured to he base 5, as by means of bolts 32, the heads of which may engage'in the recesses 6 and 7 toreanove them irom the supportmg surface;
Suitable insulated conductors provided with aphig'or other connector 36 for elec trical connection with the usual Edison or other outlet, enter the recess '7 in the base throughan opening 38 and extend from the recess '7 out through an opening 39 and up through the wallet the intermediate housing 15yand into the annular space between said wall and the heating means in said compart-merit 16 and there have suitable electrical 'connection" with the coil 8 for the usual purpose. The portions of the conductors 35 extending from the base 5 tothe housing 15 maybe enclosed within asleeve 40 Whiclrmay be a separate sleeve set in place or'it may be formed integral "with either of the parts.
The end brackets .25 may have lateral prongs or hooks for supporting the irons when not in use.-
In use, connection is made to the desired outlet and the circuit through the heating coil is turned on. The iron 50 which may, 01" course, be of the curling. Marcel, waving or other type, may be inserted into the central compartment 16 until heated the proper or desired amount for use. To prevent overheating, which has heretofore frequently resulted in burning or other injury to the hair, or has necessitated cooling of the iron before applying it to the hair; the iron, after heated the proper or desired amount, is withdrawn from the central compartn'ient 16 and inserted into either of the side compartments 17 or 18, which compartments maintain the iron at the proper and a substantially uniform temperature. The compartments 1? or 18 are heated by radiation from the heater in the compartment 16 so that the loss by radiation of the entire device is very small and the current consumption is minimized. The communication between the compartment 16 and compartments 17 and 18 is restricted and the compartments 17 and 18 will not overheat the iron, as may the compartment 16.
The iron may be used, and Where the temperature does not fall very much, placed back in one or" the side compartments 17 or 18 to maintain it at the desired temperature. here a tter use, the tempo ature of the iron drops appreciably. it may be inserted into the central compartment 16 and again brought up to the desired temperature, whereupon it may be removed and placed in one of the side compartments 17 or 18 and maintained at that temperature.
It should be noted that the iron 50 may be placed or inserted into the compartment 16 from either end and that the irons may also be placed or inserted into either of the side compartments 17 or 18 from either end. In Figure 1, I have shown two irons, one inserted into one side compartment from one end and the other inserted into the other side compartment from the other end. Such use adapts the device for use by two operators at different sides or ends of the heater.
The side compartments 17 and 18 are shown above the center of the central com partmeut 16 to expedite the heat transmission thereto, but this may, of course, be varied, as desired. It is also to be understood that while I have described the dos tails of the heating element per se, and various other details, that these are merely descriptive of the particular embodiment of the invention shown and may be varied within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
