Be it known that I,y llTlLnrAM H. SEA- Bnooii, Jr., a Ycitizen 'of lthe United States, residing at Savannah, in lthe county of llhatham and State-of Georgi-a, have invented certain new Aand useful Improvements in Hairdressing Implements, of Which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates generally to iinproveinents in barbers and Vhair dressers implements, `more particularly to a ldevice for taking kinks out of hangend has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to, for'expeditiously removing kinks from hair Without scorching or Vburning the rscalp during the operation of the-device.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to, including a heat applying element in *the forin of a coni'b, rand a `guard element associated With theheat applying element, in a manner to .prevent the vvlatter .from scorching or burning the scalp when the heat applying element is passed kthrough the hair to remove the kinks therefrom.
A further object of the invention `to provide, in a manner as hereinafter setfo'rth, `a device for the purpose referred to,
provided with `a .guard element and a heat applying element, vand with the former so constructed and arranged as to prevent the heating thereof during .the heating of the 4heat applying element prior to the application of the latter.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a ina-nner as hereinafter set forth, a device for the purpose referred to, which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, conveniently applied to the hair for the removal of kinks therefrom, and comparative ly inexpensive to manufacture.

The body portion and tines are formed of the same material and prov-ide what inay be Ytermed a heat-applying member of the comb type. Thecnterside edges of the tines f3, 'el inoline outwardly With respect to the inner side edges from the lower ends of said tines and terminate in the ends ofthe body portion l.
Formed integral with the rear end of the body portion 1 is a reduced cylindrical eX- tension 5 of substantial length, and which has its outer end formed with a depending bifurcated projection 6. Mounted on the eX- tension 5, as well as being fiXedly secured therewith, is a handle member 7, constructed of wood, and having reduced end terminal portions 8, 9. Secured to the terminal portion 8 of the handle member 7, by the holdfast devices 10, is a metallic sleeve 11, preferably of aluminum, and which has its outer end inwardly flanged, as at 12. The holdfast device 10 further provides means for securing the handle member 7 to the extension 5, as said hold-fast device 10 passes through said extension. The head of the hold-fast device 10 is counter-sunk in the sleeve 11. The sleeve 11 projects a substantial distance from the inner end of the handle member 7 and has mounted therein a circular casing formed of two matching sections 13, 14, which surround the extension 5. The sectional casing forms an air chamber 15, and the front and end walls of said casing are provided with openings 16. T he sectional casing is tightly confined between the fiange 12 of the sleeve 11 and the'inner end of the handle member 7. The sleeve 11 and sectional casing provide what may be termed a bulk heat 17 at the inner end of the handle member 7. Mounted on the reduced terminal portion 9 of the handle member 7 is a bulk head 17 similar to the bulk head 17 and through which projects the extension 5. The bulk head 17, handle member 7 and extension are secured together by a hold-fast device 18 having its head counter-sunk in the capl17. The flanged end 12 of the sleeve 11 is positioned a substantial distance from the rear or inner end of the body portion 1.
The comb-shaped member formed by the body portion 1 and the tines 2, 3 and 4 is adapted to be heated by any suitable means, and after heated sufficiently is enclosed within the guard to be presently referred to, and thenv applied to the hair for the purpose of removing the kinks therefrom. The guard with the heat applying element therein is drawn through the hair, due to the providing of the heat applying element with tines and the setting up of the guard, in a manner to be hereinafter referred to, with tines.
The guard element comprises a body portion V-shaped in vertical section. The said body portion includes a slotted bottom 19, a pair of slotted sides 20, 21, a closed front 22, closed tapered back 23, and an open top. r1`he height of the body portion of the guard element is greater than the height of the comb member of the heat applying element. The sides of the body portion of the guard element are secured to the tapered back wall 23 by `hold-fast devices 24. The slots in each side wall of the body portion 25 of the guard are indicated at 26, and the slots in the bottom of the body portion 25 are indicated at 27 and merge into the slots 26. The slots 26 are spaced equi-distant from each other and the same arrangement is had with respect to the slots 27. rlhe slots 26 are of greater height than the tines 2, and the material between the slots 26 forms tines 28 of greater height than the tines 2. The tines on one side of the body portion 25 oppose the tines on the other side of said body portion, and the opposed tines are connected together at their bottom, as at 29.
When the body portion 25 is set up relative to the comb member of the heat applying element, the tines 28 oppose certain of the tines 2, and the other of the tines 2 are exposed by the slots 26. The slotted body portion 25, in connection with the tines 2, 3 and 4, provides means to enable the device to slip readily through the hair and further for the heated body portion 1 and tines 2, 3 and 4 to heat the hair and remove the kinks therefrom, and such action is had without scorching or burning the scalp, due to the position of the guard with respect to the comb member.
For iixedly securing the comb member to the guard, when the latter encloses the former, the forward end of the comb member has an offset portion or tongue 30, which extends into a pocket 31 formed on the inner face of the front 22. The comb member is furthermore provided below the extension 5 with a tongue 32, which engages in a socket 33, formed on the inner face of the tapered back wall 23. The tongue 30 is formed integral with the forward end of the body portion 1 and the forward edge of the tine 3, and the tongue 32 is formed integral with a portion of the rear end of the body portion 1 and with the rear edge of the tine 4.

Extending in the bifurcated end 37 of the arm is a tongue 38 which projects forwardly from an arm 39, having its rear end connected to the proj ection 6 by a pivot 40 carrying a controlling spring 41, which has one end, as at 42, bearing against the inner face of the projection G and its other end,as at 4:8, engagingthe up- -pcr face of the arm :The tongue 3S swings on a vertical axis, which is provided by a pivot pinfi` therefor' secured to the rear end of the arm 556' and extend-ing through the tongue 38. The rear end of Vthe arm 3G is enlarged, as at e5, andthe forward end of the .arm 8:9 is also enlarged,

The arm 36 has secured to lthe inner side,rat the rear terminal portion thereof, a stop bar 47 which projects against the inner side of the arm 39 and arrests the inward swinging movement of the arm relative to the arm 39. The arms 39 and 36 provide a handle for the guard element.
lWhen the comb member of the heat applying element is to be heated, the arm 3G and body portion 25 of the guard element are swung at right angles with respect to the arm 39 and clear of the heating means for the comb member, whereby the guard will not become heated during the heating of the comb member.
1t is thought that the many advantages of a kink removing implement for hair, in aecordance with this invention, can be readily understood, particularly in view of the fact that it includes means to prevent the burning or scorching of the scalp during the operation of the device, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of con- :iitruction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a comb member for applying heat to the hair, a handle means extending rearwardly from said comb member, a slotted guard adapted to enclose said comb member, said comb member and guard provided with associated means for detachably connecting the comb member in enclosed position, a handle extending rearwardly from said guard, pivoted intermediate its ends, and further pivoted at its rear end with the rear end of said handle means.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a comb member for applying heat to the hair, a handle means extending rearwardly from said comb member, a slotted guard adapted to enclose 'said comb member, said comb member and guard provided with associated means for detachably connecting the comb member in enclosed position, a handle extending rearwardly from said guard, pivoted intermediate its ends and further pivoted at its rear end with the rear ,end ofsaid handle means, `and a. controlling spring positioned between 'the rear ends of said handle and handle means.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a slotted guard, a comb member adapted to be enclosed by said guard and further adapted to apply heat to the hair, said comb member provided with tongues extending into said guard, a handle means projecting rearwardly from the comb member, means carried by the guardfor detachably connecting the handle means therewith, a handle projecting rearwardly from the guard and pivotally connected at its rear end to the rear end of said handle means, and a controlling spring interposed between the rear ends of said handle and handle means, said handle formed of aA pair of sections pivoted at right angles with respect to the pivot between the rear end of said handle and said handle means.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a slotted guard, a handle extending rearwardly therefrom and formed with a pair of pivoted sections, a comb member adapted to be positioned within said guard and further adapted to apply heat to the hair, an extension projecting rearwardly from said comb member, means for pivotally connecting the rear end of said extension to the rear en'd of said handle, the pivot between the handle sections disposed at right angles with respect to the pivot l\etween said handle and extension, means for detachably connecting said comb member within said guard, and a handlemember ixedly secured to said extension.

A device for the purpose set forth comprising a slotted guard, a handle extending rearwardly therefrom and formed with a pair of pivoted sections, a comb-member adapted to be positioned within said guard and further adapted to apply heat to the hair, an extension projecting rearwardly from said comb member, means for pivotally connecting the rear -end of said extension to the rear end of said handle, the pivot between the handle sections disposed at right angles with respect to the pivot between said handle and extension, means for detachably connecting said comb member Within said guard, a handle member ixedly secured to Said extension, and means for limiting the movement in one direction of said handle sections relative to each other, and a bulk head secured to the forward end of said handle member.
