ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 11, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE M nrELAsH CUBLER,
Henry S.'Risberg, Brooklyn, NQY. ApplicationJuly 30, 1936, Serial No. 93,320
. 8* (llaims. (Cl. 13232) This invention relates to devices for improving the facial appearance of individuals, with particular respect to their eyes.
An object of the invention is to provide a small,
compact implement by which the eyelashes may be curled upwardly, producing the effect of eye enlargement by causing the eye to apparently dilate, and also to prevent the upper and lower lashesfrom becoming entangled.
A further feature is in the provision of a simple device, easily applied and operated, that is highly effective in obtaining the requisite results in a moment of time and which causes no pain, discomfort or inconvenience to the person to whom it is applied.
These and other advantageous purposes, as will hereinafter appear, are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of simple parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential component ofthis disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the curling appliance.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the center of the same.
Figure 3 is a partial plan, partial sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing,
hingedly connected, provided with spreading means and having cooperative jaws at their free ends. 1
One of the levers 10, shown as the lower, is
essentially a straight fiat plate provided with a stamped reenforcing rib ll, while at the rear are spaced lugs I2 turned upwardly at right angles and terminating in points constituting stops I3. The front portion. of the lever 10 is shaped to present a raised stem l4 integrally supporting a concavely curved out-reaching flat jaw [5, which is slightly arcuate in front elevation, conforming to the general'shape of an eyelash, and profided with a plurality of perforations l6.
An elastic cushion 20, such as semi-soft rubber, is shaped in conformity with the profile of the jaw 15 and providedat its under side with projections 2| engageable in the perforations l6 and by which the cushion is'held securely but removably upon the jaw.
The other, upper lever 25 has a raised central longitudinal reenforcing rib 26, and a downwardly curved rear portion 21 blending into a finger the device will be seen to consist of two levers,
rest 28, concavely curved in cross section and atfording a convenient grip.
A pair. of. lugs 29 on the side edges of the lever 25 are suited to engage over the lugs l2 of the opposed lever and are held together by a pivot pin-30.
A spring 3| is coiled around the pin 30, one of its forwardly extending ends contacting the inner surface of the leverv I 0 while the other end makes contact with the adjacent surface of the upper lever 25, acting to spread the levers to the limit of the stops I3, which contact the under surface of the lever 25 rearwardly of the pin.
The front end 32 of the lever 25 is curved downwardly constituting a jaw 33 or pressure member of thin cross section adapted to seat centrally on the cushion 20 when the levers are pressed together bringing the jaws into juxtaposition, to cause the eyelashes held therebetween to assume and maintain the desired shape.
To retain the jaws in a closed position the lever I ll has an eye 35 pressed outwardly from its lower side and pivoted therein is a closed wire clasp loop 36 adapted to'be pressed over the upper surface of the lever 25 and when in a forward, clamping position, held by nodes 31 on the lever.
In operation the jaws are applied to the eyelashes as closely as practical to the lid, whereupon the levers are clamped by the loop 36 in a closed position, causing the lashes to assume a desirable upwardly curled position.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed ineluding modifications without departing-from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described theinvention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. An eyelash .curler comprising a pair of clamp levers pivoted at one end and having jaws bowed andarched to conform with the shape of a human eyelash at their opposite ends, a yielding cover on one of said jaws, and a rigid complementary pressure member on the other jaw, said jaws moving in the path of a circular are.
2. An eyelash curler comprising a pair of swinging jaws bowed, arched and shaped in conformity with a human eyelash, one of said jaws pliant and the other rigid, levers on which said jaws are mounted, said levers being pivotally united resilient means to normally spread said jaws and means to clamp said levers when said jaws are juxtaposed.
3. An eyelash curler comprising a pair of correlated hinged jaws bowed, arched and shaped in conformity with a human eyelash, one of said jaws pliant and theother rigid, and levers integral with said jaws, said levers being pivotally united at their ends opposite the jaws, said jaws operating in arcuate paths.
4. An eyelash curler comprising a pair of correlated hinged jaws bowed, arched and shaped in conformity with a human eyelash, one of said jaws pliant and the other rigid, and means for:
clamping'said jaws when closed.
5. An eyelash curler comprising a pair of correlated jaws bowed, arched andshapedin conformity with a human eyelash, one of said jaws pliant and the other rigid, levers on which saidjaws are mounted, said levers being pivotally united, a finger grip on one of said levers adapted to' prevent slipping during manipulation, means for clamping said levers when the jaws are inclosed position, and a stop limiting the opening of said jaws.
6. An eyelash curler comprising a pair of levers having inbent terminals at one end, said terminals correlated and pivotally united, inturned jaws at their opposite ends, said jaws concavely curved, one of said jaws terminating in a seat pivotally connected at one end, concavely curved correlated jaws at their opposite ends, one of said jaws presenting a flat surfaced seat disposed in the plane of the pivot and having openings therethrough, an elastic cushion on said seat ings, a narrow rim on the opposed jaw to contact said cushion, and resilient means coiled around the lever pivot to normally spread said levers apart, said levers constituting handles by which the curler is manipulated.
8. An eyelash curler comprising a pair of levers pivotally connected at one end, concavely curved correlated jaws at their opposite ends, one of said jaws presenting a flat surfaced seat disposed in the plane of the pivot, an elastic cushion on said seat, a narrow rim on the opposed jaw to contact said cushion, a finger rest combined with one of said levers and a pivoted loop carried by one lever toclamp said jaws together.
