A 1,527,964 PATENT OFFICE.
JORGE GERARDO PATINO, 0'! NEW YORK, Ill. Y.
EYELASH ounnnn.
. a Application filed December 6, 192 3. Serial No. 678,927.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jonon Gnrmnoo P A- TINO, a citizen of ,Republic of Bol1v1a, South America, and a resident of the crty, county, and State of New York, have 1n-' vented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyelash Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this; invention are to provide a simple and practical'device for curling the eyelashes, which can be readily operated and used without the danger of in uring the eyes or the lashes and which furthermore will be of light, inexpensive construction.
- These objects are attained in the form of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a plan 'view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section.
Figure 3 is an enlarged broken plan view of the meshing or overlapping parts of the jaws.
Figure t is an enlargd cross sectional view of the hair-crimping jaws as taken on substantially the plane of line 4-4 of Figure 1, and Figure 5 is a detail of the same as in use. I
The embodiment of the invention herein disclosed comprises a pair of cooperating jaws shaped to fit about the rim of the eyelid and arranged to grip the eyelashes in such a way'as to impart a bend or curvature to the ends of the same.
The upper jaw is shown as made up of a plate 5 having downturned edges providing a pair of spaced substantially parallel side bars 6 connected at the front by a crimping or curling bar 7 formed with an inward curvature adapting it to fit about the edge of the eyelid.
The lower jaw is shown as made up of a plate 8, also recessed at its forward edge in substantial conformity with the curvature of the eyelid and carrying upstanding ridges or ledges 9, 10, curved to correspond with the curvature of the gripping edge on the upper jaw and spaced in substantial parallelism to receive such edge between them. The inner of these ridges is shown as higher than the outer and they are both shown as inclined forwardly, so as to stand substantially parallel with the gripping portion of the upper jaw ,(Figure 4).
A strip of elastic 11 is shown seated in the bottom of the groove provided between the'spaced ridges, providing a resilient pad against which the lashes will be held by the curved bar of the upper jaw. To prevent breaking and cutting of the lashes between the overlapping parts of the jaws, grooves 12 are provided to receive the indlvidual winkers or lashes. These grooves are shown as located in the opposing faces of the spaced ridges on the lower jaw and as being produced by the cuts between a. series of adjoining V'-shaped teeth. This V-constructionenables the individual hairs or lashes to readily slide to one side or the other into' the grooves and prevents them frombeing pinched between the jaw parts.
The jaws are shown as held to ether by a spring hinge construction embodying a C- shaped spring 13 through which rearward extensions of the jaws project, said extensions'being illustrated as cupped to provide finger grips 14.
In using the device, the jaws are opened by pinching together the finger grip extensions and in this opened condition the device is positioned over the eye so that as the. jaws are allowed to close, they will grip between them the protruding lashes. The skeleton structure of the forward part of the upper jaw enables the; operation to be readily observed in a mirror so that a person can conveniently use the device with the aid of a mirror. The v shaped fluting of the lower jaw automatically segregates the lashes and prevents any injury to the same. The forward inclination of the meetingparts of the jaws produces an abrupt or acute angular bend of the ends of the lashes which leaves them with attractively curled upwardly curved tips when the clamp is removed.
In Figures 1 and 3 the grooved'or fluted ridges of the lower jaws are shown as having convexly curved end extensions 15, 16 designed to catch the spreading lashes at the ends of the eyelid.
What I claim is:
1. An eyelash curler comprising cooperating jaws curved to fit about the eyelid and formed with overlapping eyelash gripping members, with a resilient pad at the base of such overlapping portions.
2. An eyelash curler comprising cooperating jaws, one having a gripping edge curved to fit about the eyelid and the other having substantially parallel curved ridges spaced to receive the gripping edge of the first jaw with a pad of resilient material seated be- 4. An eyelash curler comprising cooperattween said ridges. ing jaws curved to fit about the eyelid, one 3. An eyelash curler comprising cooperatof said jaws having substantially parallel ing jaws, one having a gripping edge curved curved ridges spaced to receive the other '5 to fit about the eyelid and the other having jaw between them andone of said ridges be- 15 substantially parallel curved ridges spaced ing grooved to separate and guide the lashes. to receive the gripping edge of the first jaw, 11 witness -whereof I have hereunto set said ridges having convexly curved ends to my hand this 3rd day of December, 1923. catch the spreading lashes the ends ot" the MD eyelid.
