HOOK FOR CONVERTIBLE WATCHES.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
Application filed May 23, 1921. Serial No. 471,552.
T 0 all whom it may concern: g
Be it known that l, J osnrrr DAVING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough and county of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inHooks for Convertible Watches, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to watches generally, and particularly to the class of time pieces known and adapted for use as wrist watches,-my object being to render such watches convertible for use also as pendents, either for suspension on a necklace or band, on a fob chain, or on an ordinary pocket watch chain or guard, as hereinafter fully set forth,--the invention consisting in the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and devices described and claimed, and a distinctive feature being the provision of sets of duplex loops on opposite sides of the watch case for articulative engagement with spring snap hook couplings on the suspender clasps, whereby the watch may be readily attached to or detached from either of the means of wearable connective supports designated.
In the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1, is a face view of my improved watch as attached to a neck ribbon or band for use as a bosom pendent;
Fig. 2, is a face view of my convertible watch as attached to a band for use as a wrist watch;
Fig. 3, is a view of the outer casing or frame in which the watch works are mounted, showing the side loops;
Fig. 4:, is an elevation in detail of one end of the watch case frame, showing one of the coupling devices connected therewith;
Fig. 5, is a-perspective view of the snap hook coupling shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the spring snap hook coupling shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
It is to bev understood that the shape of the watch works frame or casing C, is not material to my invention,.and that the elongated watch and easing shown in the drawings is by way of exemplification only, the essential feature in this respect being the formation of the watch works casing C, with a plurality of loops 0, 0, on opposite sides thereof for copulative engagement with spring snap hook devices h, h. The two loops 0, 0, on each side of the watcl1case C, are spaced apart sufliciently to afford means of attachment on either side of the center of the watch works 7 is positioned on one of the sides providedwith my duplex connective loops 0, c, as in Figs. 1 and 2, of the drawings, said loops 0, c, are positioned on either side thereof, and protect it from'undue contact with extraneous objects, performing in fact, in thisrespect, the same function of a guard thereto usually afforded by the swivel loop of an ordinary watch as heretofore equipped.
The duplex couplingdevices It, it, may be varied more or less in configuration without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention as related thereto,-the essential feature being the formation of each coupling device it, h, with twin hooks h,h,for direct contactual engagement with the duplex loops 0, c, on the watch casing C, and with co-acting spring detents 71 72 which automatically lock in the bights of said loops 0, c, and prevent accidental displacement or uncoupling of the parts when connected, as shown particularly in Fig. 4c, of the drawings. Thus, in Figs. 1 and 5, of the drawings the duplex coupling device it, considered as a unitary structure, and in this instance intended more particularly as a means of connecting a neck band N, with the watch case C, when it is desired to use the latter as a bosom pendent, maybe formed with an ornamental front plate h of any suitable design as well as with the cross bar h*, for attachment to said suspen-= der N; whereas the duplex coupling devices it, shown in the other figures of the drawing as connecting the watch case C, with the medial ends of a wrist band B, are of plainer structure, the ornamental front plate being omitted, but each hook it, being formed with the cross bar 70*, for attachment to said band B, as indicated in Fig. 2, of the drawings.
It is to be understoodin this connection that the twin loops 0, c, on opposite sidesv hi W, are in like mannerspaced apart so as to fit into the loops 0, c, on either side ofthe I watchcasing C, so that the parts are inter changeable, thus rendering the watch convertible for wrist, pendent, or pocket use, 1
as may be found most expedient or con venient, to suit the convenience or preference of the wearer.
By the term supporting means as used in the claims I mean to designate either a sus pender, as N, in Fig. l, a band, as B, in Fig. 2, or any equivalent sustaining means, attached to the duplex coupling devices it, it, in such manner as to afford the desired support for the Watch when. said coupling devices are connected therewith in the manner herein set forth.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a duplex coupling device for convertible Watches formed of a single piece of material with resilient twin hooks With overlapping free ends, and a cross bar connecting the hook portions.
2. A duplex coupling device "for convertiole Watches comprising two substantially similar members, each With twin spring hooks and spring detents, and a front plate, and eachhook formed with a cross bar as and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH DAVING.
