FASTENING.
APPLICATION FILED MAB.27,1905.

PATENT OEEIcE.
ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
FASTENING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,695, dated. July 11, 1905. Application filed March 27, 1905- Serial No. 252,162.
To all whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH BAGNALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, county of Bristol, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastening device for chains or bracelets, and particularly one to which a locket or bangle is to be attached. In a fastening device for this purpose it is very desirable to have the features of simplicity and effectiveness combined with strength and safety, as the articles joined and attached are often of a considerable value and to be guarded carefully against loss or accident.
The present invention contemplates a fastening which may be formed from a single piece of wire stock in such a manner that it secures the complete fastening of the parts and is so simple as to be inexpensive and free from liability to get out of order. This fastening consists of a double hook with a central loop adapted to receive a locket or other ornament. It may be, however, of sufficiently attractive appearance to warrant the omission of such ornament and as it is of some comparative weight will cause the chain if worn as a neck-chain to hang down in the position desired.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a view of a chain with the fastening in place and supporting a locket. Fig. 2 is a view of the chain and fastening with the locket removed, and Fig. 3 a view of the fastening.
1 is a chain of any type small rings 2.
3 is thefastening device, which consists of a central depending loop 4:, having suspending-hooks 5 formed at each end, said hooks being turned outward, but being brought back to substantially contact with the central loop at 6 to prevent the escape of the rings 2 when once they have been slipped by said point.
7 is a locket having the usual suspendingring 8.
In use the fastening 3 is attached to one end of the chain by having one of its hooks 5 having at its ends caught into one of the terminal rings 2 of the chain, said ring being passed beyond the contact-point 6, so that it cannot escape. There is sufficient spring to the wire stock from which the fastening is made to allow the ring to pass this point by a slight push and be restrained against any accidental removal. If a locket or other ornament is to be used, it is slipped onto the other hook, past the point 6, and around to the depending loop 4, where it hangs centrally of the catch. As mentioned above, the catch has sufficient weight to cause the chain to hang down and assists in bringing the locket to the proper position. In this condition even with the chain only hooked on one side the locket cannot escape and fall from the chain on account of the contacting portions 6, past which both the ring on the end of the chain and that on the locket have passed. The chain may therefore be left with the locket on it without danger of having the same drop off, and all that is necessary in putting on the chain is to hook the other ring 2 onto the other hook 5.
This fastening device may obviously be variously modified in its shape and decorated and elaborated in various ways. It may also be used with various other devices and in connection with other articles than chains and bracelets and for attaching other things than lockets and bangles.
WhatI therefore claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a chain having ringterminals and a fastening device, consisting of a central depending loop and suspending-hooks formed on its opposite ends and adapted to engage said ring-terminals.
2. The combination of a chain having ringterminals, and a fastening device consisting of a central depending loop, and spring suspending-hooks formed on its opposite ends and adapted to engage said ring-terminals, said hooks approaching said central loop, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH BAGNALL.
