Application filed March 4, 1922. Serial No. 55,049.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EUGENE FRANQOIS Srrrnn, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at 23 Grafton Street, PiccadillygVV. 1, city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers,
of which the following is a description.
direction, the coils near the root end of the tress may be tightened without injury to the hair or the curler, and be kept tight during the subsequent treatment.
It is well known that the process of permanently waving a tress of hair entails the tight winding of the tress upon the curler preparatory to and during the subsequent treatment of steaming, and that as the hair is newest and-thickest near the roots it is desirable for the coils to be tightest at the root end of the tress where they are most ditlicult to wind tightly. This desideratum has hitherto been obtained by employing a curler (such as described in the specification of my British Patent No. 109718) having a short part to which the root end of the tress is attached and a long part upon which the tress is wound and secured, the two parts being connected by a ratchet and pawl device so that the coils near their junction may be tightened and kept by holding the short part and turning the long part. The disadvantages of such device are that the tress can only be wound upon the curler in one direction, that the ratchet and pawl device is liable to fail from corrosion caused by steaming, and that in order to hold the gripped with pliers which surface or the hair wound former must be may damage its thereon.
i Xiccording to this invention, while employing a curler of the above type, but without the ratchet and pawl device, I provide the short partwith an extension passing right through the hollow long part and tershort iart when turning the lon )ilIt the v 2 m springs open and engages the long part,.but'
which when gripped closes and disengages the long part, so that the two operations of holdingthe short part and releasing the long part are performed simultaneously bv one hand, and the other hand is left free to turn the released long part. The engagement between the two partsmay be frictional or a more positiveengagemeut such as a pin and ;hQlQ ;{lI 1(l the handle'may be of a size and shape sultabl'ei'or holding with thehand or may be only a small projection suitable for holding with pliers or other tool.
I now proceed to describe in detail and by way of example one form of hair curler according to my invention and in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through a hair curler according to my invention;
F 1 is a detailof a portion of the eX- terior of the hair curler illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a second form of hair curler according to my invention. c
In Figure 1 a is theshort part provided with an extension 0 passing through the hollow long part b and terminating in the two springs d, and (Z which project beyond the end of the long part b, and to which are attached thesplit handles 6 and 6 A por tion f and f of each split handle projects into the. tube 6, and may fit closely therein when pressed apart by the springs (Z and 0Z so as to form a frictional engagement between the parts a and b, but I prefer to provide each portion f and f with pins 9 and which fit into the diametrically opposite holes of a ring of holes in the tube Z) and provide a positive engagement between the parts a and bi Vith this curler the root end of a tress of hair is bound together and attached to i upon the long part b, the split handles 6 Figure 2 shows a modification in which the end of the long part Z) is made square and the springs 6Z1 and (Z2 press against the flats of the square and give a positive engagement without the use of pins and holes. Projecting springs without handles are very convenient for holding with pliers, and provide a means for using such a tool without damaging the surface 01" the part a or the hair wound thereon.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. A hair curler comprising in combination a long hollow part, and a short part mounted at one end of said long part and having an extension passing through said hollow part and terminating in a projection which normally engages said hollow part and prevents it turning in either direction with respect to said hollow part, said eX tension being releasable from said hollow part and permitting said short part to be turned in either direction, for the purpose described.
2. A hair curler comprising in combination a long hollow part, a short part at one end of said hollow part, and an extension fixed to said short part and running through said hollow part, said extension including a pair of springs having their one ends fixed to said extension, and handle pieces fixed to said springs and extension without said hollow part at the end opposite said short part, said handle pieces having projections thereon within said hollow part and said hollow part having apertures therein for receiving said projections.
