1 Claim. (Cl. 132-42) This invention relates to what are more generally known as platform curlers. More particularly, the invention deals with the means for coupling the curl retaining or holding member with the body portion of the curler to simplify and economize on the structure of the device as a whole.

Still more particularly, the invention deals with a curler of the character described, employing an apertured tubular body having flared end portions and an apertured platform pivotally mounted in connection with one end of said body.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

Fig. 1 is an enlarged side view of a curler made according to my invention, with part of the construction shown in section and with part indicated in extended position in dot-dash lines; and

Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the end portion of the curler body with an apertured wall portion in normal extended position in full lines and in a compressed position in dot-dash lines.

12, 13, has circumferentially and longitudinally spaced apertures 14 for ventilation purposes. Pivoted to the end 12 of the body 10, as seen at 15, is a platform element 16, generally conforming to the contour of the body throughout its length and having depending pivot ears, one of which is indicated at 17 in Fig. 1, to receive the pivot pin, as at 15.

It will, thus, be apparent that the element 16 can be swung on the body 10 to clear the body for the winding of a swatch of hair thereon, preparatory to movement of the platform into position on the wound swatch of hair and then completing the winding of the swatch of hair around the curler, preparatory to retaining the hair against displacement from the curler by a retaining or holding member 18, preferably in the form of an elastic or extensible cord.

The platform 16 has, on its upper surface, longitudinally spaced apertures 19 for the purpose of ventilating the hair, as will be apparent.

The end portion 12 of the curler is originally formed 2,884,933 Patented May 5, 1959 with an extending wall part 20, the outer end portion of which is divided by an aperture 21 to form a pair of gripper jaws 22. The wall 20 is indicated in its normal extended position in dot-dash lines in Fig. l of the drawing and shown in this position in full lines in Fig. 2.

In assemblage of the member 18, one end portion 18 thereof is forced into the aperture 21, after which the jaws 22 are forced inwardly to firmly grip the end portion 18' in permanently retaining the end portion 18' against displacement from the coupling wall 20.

After this attachment has been made in the manner which is clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing, the wall 20 is folded, as at 23, Fig. 1, inwardly upon the adjacent portion of the wall of the body 10, substantially as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing, so as to dispose the end portion 18 of the member 18 closely adjacent the wall of the body 10.

Clamped onto the other end portion 18" of the member 18 is a split collar 24 having an integral coupling hook 25, which is adapted to engage the end 13 of the body 10 when the member 18 is in operative position in retaining the curler against displacement from the hair wound upon the curler.

By virtue of the simplicity in the structure of the wall 20 and the attachment of one end of the member 18 therewith, as well as in attachment of the hook 25 to the other end portion of the member 18, the structure of the complete curler is materially simplified.

It will also be apparent that, by positioning the wall 20 or the grippers 22 thereof closely adjacent the inner surface of the wall of the body 10, a relatively large ventilating aperture is maintained at the end 12 for free circulation of air through the body of the curler in drying the hair wound thereon.

With curlers of the kind under consideration, the ends of the swatch of hair wound directly upon the body 10 of the curler will form short waves; whereas, that part of the hair which is wound on the curler after the platform is in position will form longer waves and these adjacent the scalp, thus producing a soft wave efiect of the hair.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A curler of the character described, comprising an elongated tubular body having longitudinal and circumferentially spaced apertures, one end portion of the body having an integral extended wall apertured to form a pair of grippers, an extensible hair retaining member having one end arranged between and secured by the grippers of said wall, the grippers being disposed within said end of the curler body and extending longitudinally of and adjacent the inner surface of a wall of said body, and means, fixed to the other end portion of said member, for engaging the other end portion of the curler body.
