Savage, Baltimore, Md. Filed Jan. 29, 1964, Ser. No. 340,912 Claims. (Cl. 132-40) The present invention relates to a hair curling roller with self-contained clamp and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a hair setting roller which consist of a perforated cylindrical body, an insert which is press fitted into a groove provided on the interior of the body, a novel lever which is pivotally connected to the insert and a spring interconnecting the insert and the lever. The device is such that hair may be wrapped around the cylindrical body with the lever in a position substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body after which the lever is moved into a position alongside the body to thus hold the hair securely to the body. The spring is of the over center type so that it will maintain the lever in either its open or closed position. Another feature of the invention is a novel means for mounting the lever upon the aforesaid insert. The device is preferably formed of a plastic material and is easily assembled and disassembled.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a novel hair curling roller with a self-contained clamp.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel clamp forming a part of the invention.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel over center spring for said clamp.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of the body of the device forming the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of an insert forming a part of the invention,
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 but taken from the opposite side thereof,
FIGURE 4 is a vertical sectional view of the body and insert in assembled condition,
FIGURE 5 is an elevational view, partly broken away, illustrating the completely assembled device in closed condition,
FIGURE 6 is a view similar to FIGURE 5 but illustrating the device in partially opened condition, and
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 7-7 of FIGURE 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a hair curling roller of the character set forth comprising an elongated hollow cylindrical body 10 having a plurality of openings 11 therein and provided in spaced relation to one end thereof with an annular groove 12 in the inner face thereof.
An insert is generally indicated at 13 and is of frustoconical shape, the larger edge thereof being provided with a pair of diametrically opposed arcuate flanges 14 and, in right angular relationship to the flanges 14, with a pair of inwardly directed slots 15.
Centrally with respect to one of the flanges 14, the
insert 13 is provided with an inwardly directed block 16 having an integrally formed angularly and inwardly directed car 17 extending therefrom. The ear 17 is provided with a tnansverse circular opening 18. A lever or clamp member is best shown in FIGURES 5 and 6 and is generally indicated at 38. The clamp 38 consists of a U-shaped body 19 having at its inner end an angularly directed bifurcated portion 20 the inner faces of the legs of which are each provided with an opposed protuberance 21. The outer end of the body 19 has integrally formed therewith a curved clamp arm 22 having a series of longitudinally spaced inwardly directed teeth 23 on that side thereof which faces the body 10 when the clamp is in closed condition as viewed, for example, in FIGURE 5.
The inner face of the insert 13 is provided with a relatively long rectangular opening 24 and, in spaced relation thereto, a relatively short, like openings 25. This leaves what may be termed a post 27 beteween the openings 24 and 25. A tension spring 26 has one end thereof extended through the openings 24 and 25 about the post 27 and has its other end fastened, as indicated at 28 to the inner end of the U-shaped body 19.
It will be apparent that the insert 13 may be pressfitted into the groove 12 in the body 10, the slots 15 assisting in this operation. It will also be seen that the bifurcated portions 20 may be moved over the car 17 until the protuberancese 21 align themselves in the opening 18 thus permitting the clamp arm 38 to be hinged thereto.
In operation, it will be seen that the lever arm 38 may first be extended to a position substantailly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body 10 whereupon the hair of the user may be wrapped around the body 10. During this operation, it will be seen that the tension spring will, due to its over center action with respect to the hinge point 21, maintain the clamp 38 in extended position. When the hair has been wrapped about the body 10 as aforesaid, the lever or clamp 38 may then be pivoted upon its hinge 21 to the position shown in FIGURE 5 whereupon the spring 26 will again act to maintain it in such position due again to the over center action with respect to the pivotal point 21. In such closed condition, it will be apparent that the clamp arm 22 will be held against the hair so wrapped about the body 10 by the action of the spring and that the teeth 23 will assist in maintaining the hair in position. The device is preferably formed of a plastic material which may be easily cleaned and the spring is preferably formed of a metal which is non-corrosive.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising an oper-ended hollow cylindrical body having a plurality of openings therein and having an anular groove in the inner face thereof adjacent one end thereof, an insert having a split flange removably received in said groove, an apertured ea-r formed integrally with said insert and extending toward the adjacent open end of said body, a lever pivotally connected to said ear and extensible outwardly and longitudinally of said body and in abutting relation to the outer side of said body, and a tension spring connected at one of its ends to said insert and at its other end to said lever in over center relationship to the pivotal point of said lever.
2. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said body, said insert and said lever are all formed of a plastic material.
