Abstract

A hair curler comprising a cylinder provided with a row of teeth so that hair may be wound around it and secured thereon, together with a cylindrical clip member formed by two half cylinders joined together by hinges and provided with spring means to maintain the clip member fitting closely around the cylinder.

HAIR CURLER 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to a new type of hair curler that has a new type of clip member used in conjunction with it.

2. Prior Art Although cylinders for winding hair and, means for securing hair so wound are well known in the prior art, applicants know of no prior art showing the particular structure of the cylindrical clip member and spring means shown and claimed herein.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A new and improved hair curler device having a cylinder for winding hair and a row of teeth thereon to help maintain the hair in position. The hair curler has a clip member with a spring activated hinge which fits closely around the cylinder to maintain the hair wound around the cylinder tightly in place. The construction of the clip member permits easy removal and replacement of the clip member as needed or as desired.

Although conventional hair curlers known in the prior art had some means to maintain hair in place that had been wound around the circumference of a cylinder, such means were unsatisfactory in that they were difficult to remove and failed to maintain a close fitting position around the wound hair.

It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a hair curler with satisfactory means for keeping wound hair on a cylinder in place.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair curler with a removable clip member means which is relatively easy to remove and replace in position.

A further object of this invention is to provide a hair curler with a removable clip member that has improved spring means to maintain the clip member in position around a cylinder with hair wound around it, so that a close tit will be maintained by the clip member around the wound hair.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a hair curler with a removable clip member that is relatively easy to manufacture and assemble.

These and other objects will be more readily understood by reference to the following specification and claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the hair curler with the clip member in position closely fitting around the cylinder.

FIG. 2 is a top view of the hair curler showing the construction of the spring means and hinged portion.

FIG. 3 is a view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.

FIG. 5 is a view showing a strand of hair wound around the cylinder portion of the hair curler with the clip member being placed into position around the outer circumference of the cyhnden As showing in the drawings, the hair curler has a cylinder 12 with a plurality of holes 14 throughout its body, both for decreasing the weight of the cylinder and for cooling purposes. Each of the ends 16 of the cylinder have flanges 18 extending outwardly to help secure the clip member 20 into position. The cylinder 12 is provided with a longitudinal row of teeth 21 to secure the ends of a strand of hair when the hair is being wound around the cylinder 12.

The clip member 20 has a plurality of holes 23 throughout its body, both for decreasing the weight of the clip member 20 and for cooling purposes. The clip member 20 is preferably made of two half cylinders 22 and 24, which are joined together by hinges 26 and a pin 28. Each of the half cylinders 22 and 24 has a handle member 30 formed from the hinge side of each and fixed at an angle away from each other to form a V-shaped handle 32.

A spring 34 is located between the handle members 30 with its ends 36 bearing against the inner portion of one handle member 30, and with its coils 38 tightly wound around in 28 and separated by a loop 40 that bears against the other andle member 30. The spring 34 is biased so as to maintain the half cylinders 22 and 24 in a closely fitting position around cylinder 12.

The half cylinders 22 and 24 each have a longitudinal flange 42 at the opposite side from the hinge side. The flange 42 may bear against the row of teeth 21 to prevent excessive rotation of the clip member 20 after it has been placed into position.

In operation, a strand of hair to be curled is wound around cylinder 12 and its ends caught by the row of teeth 21. After winding the hair as desired, the clip member 20 is grasped and the handle 32 is squeezed to open the clip member to permit it to be placed around the cylinder 12 and the hair wound around cylinder 12. After the clip member 20 has been placed into position, the handle 32 is released, and the spring 34 returns the half cylinders 22 and 24 to their original closed position, thereby closely surrounding the hair wound around cylinder 12 and maintaining the hair in a tight curled position.

After a suitable time has elapsed, the clip member 20 is easily removed by squeezing the handle 32 together, thereby opening the closed half cylinders 22 and 24 sufiiciently to remove the clip member 20 from the cylinder 12 without disturbing the hair wound around cylinder 12.

The hair curler is preferably made of a suitable metal that can be readily rolled into a cylindrical shape, and that will thereafter keep its cylindrical shape in use.

Although we have described a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is understood that various and sundry modifications in construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the invention as indicated in the following claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

We claim:

1. In a hair curler device of the type comprising a cylinder having outwardly extending flanges at each end, and a longitudinal row of teeth extending outwardly from its outer circumference, in combination with a clip member formed by two half cylinders the improvement comprising:

said half cylinders having their congruent longitudinal ends formed into interlocking hinge members, said hinge members having a pin positioned therein maintaining said ends together, and

spring biased handle means extending outwardly from the hinged sides of said half cylinders, whereby said clip member may be placed in a closely fitting position around said cylinder and easily removed therefrom, when said cylinder has hair wound around it.

2. A hair curler according to claim 1 in which said half cylinders each have a flange outwardly extending from the side opposite to the hinged side of each cylinder.

3. A hair curler according to claim 1 in which the spring biased handle means has a spring with its ends bearing against one inner side of said handle means and the spring has a loop bearing against the other inner side of said handle means.

4. A hair curler according to claim 1 in which the handle means comprises a flange outwardly extending from each hinged side of said half cylinders.

Claims (4)

1. In a hair curler device of the type comprising a cylinder having outwardly extending flanges at each end, and a longitudinal row of teeth extending outwardly from its outer circumference, in combination with a clip member formed by two half cylinders the improvement comprising: said half cylinders having their congruent longitudinal ends formed into interlocking hinge members, said hinge members having a pin positioned therein maintaining said ends together, and spring biased handle means extending outwardly from the hinged sides of said half cylinders, whereby said clip member may be placed in a closely fitting position around said cylinder and easily removed therefrom, when said cylinder has hair wound around it.

2. A hair curler according to claim 1 in which said half cylinders each have a flange outwardly extending from the side opposite to the hinged side of each cylinder.

3. A hair curler according to claim 1 in which the spring biased handle means has a spring with its ends bearing against one inner side of said handle means and the spring has a loop bearing against the other inner side of said handle means.

4. A hair curler according to claim 1 in which the handle means comprises a flange outwardly extending from each hinged side of said half cylinders.
