Abstract

The device is a hair waving and curling roller with a concentric, movable, inner rod. This flexible rod has a fin projectible through an opening in the roller. In one position, the fin maintains full roller diameter. In another, it reduces the roller size after hair rolled on it has become saturated and softened. This causes the hair ends to curl tighter and creates a well shaped curl at the ends of the strands.

HAIR WAVE AND CURLING DEVICE This invention relates to a new and useful device for giving permanent waves either in beauty salons or in home wave applicator kits.
Permanent waving is the process of saturating hair with a liquid chemical and then wrapping or rolling sections of the hair around a roller and retaining it on the roller until the hair structure is softened to the degree that the hair assumes the shape of a wave pattern.
The prior known devices utilized in connection with such waving and curling of hair are generally rigid in form and remain that way during the permanent waving process. While such curlers will form a wave in the hair they cannot form a good curl at the ends of the hair strands. These rollers come in various sizes and diameters but each roller is generally of a fixed size and diameter which does not change during use.
This invention as compared to such existing curlers or waving devices has for its object a marked improvement in results, particularly in creating a well-shaped curl at the ends of the hair strands and to permit even a novice successfully to permanent wave hair each and every time.
Referring to the drawing,
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the new device in its first or initial position;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 but showing the device in its second or flexed position;
FIG. 3 is one member and FIG. 4 is the other member of the device.
The device of this invention is made up of an outer part 1, a hollow cylinder, and an inner part 2, a rod or shaft which fits into the hollow cylinder 1 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The rod or shaft 2 has a vane or fin 3 extending lengthwise of the rod and an end 4 which fits into and revolves in an end opening 5 in the outer cylinder 1. The vane or fin 3 extends through an open portion 6 of the cylinder 1 and can be turned 180 in the opening to abut and rest against the faces 7 of the opening 5. The other end of rod 2 has an enlarged bearing portion 8 which fits into and turns in an opening 9 in the cylinder 1. A plug 10 is attached by a cord or elastic 11 to the bearing portion 8 of the rod 2. The enlarged portion of plug 10 fits into the opening 5 at one end of the cylinder 1 and a reduced portion 12 fits into the rod opening 5 in cylinder 1. The entire device can be considered a permanent flexible rod and while it can be made in various sizes and diameters preferably should be of a comparatively short and small size to make individual waves or curls from strands of hair. The fin extends outwardly and is frictionally so held until the permanent flexible rod is manually flexed by a simple twist of the knob 8 which in turn causes semirotation of the fin and a reduction of the space between the shaft 2 and fin 3 and the outer cylinder 1 or in effect a reduction of the circumference of the combined shaft 2, fin 3 and hair rolled thereon.
The permanent flexible rod can be used in giving permanent waves either in beauty salons or in homepacked permanent waves. The hair is saturated with the liquid chemical and then sections or strands are wrapped or rolled around the shaft. It changes in physical size to produce the desired wave or curl. Because of its flexing ability the new device reduces in circumference while the hair is softened and causes the ends of the hair to curl tighter around the rod and create a well-shaped curl at the ends of the hair strands. Having fully described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A hair wave and curling roller with a fin member forming part of the circumference of the roller and movable around the longitudinal axis of the roller to reduce the diameter of the roller after hair has been rolled thereon.
2. A hair wave and curling roller comprising two concentric cylinders, an inner and an outer, the outer cylinder being hollow through its longitudinal axis and the inner cylinder being movably and partially rotatably mountable therein, said outer cylinder having an opening in its wall and said inner cylinder having a vane projectable through said opening, said vane when extending through said opening intermediate the walls thereof substantially restoring the outer cylinders diameter and when extending through said opening and rotated against one of the walls of said opening reducing the outer cylinders diameter at said opening.

Claims (2)

1. A hair wave and curling roller with a fin member forming part of the circumference of the roller and movable around the longitudinal axis of the roller to reduce the diameter of the roller after hair has been rolled thereon.
2. A hair wave and curling roller comprising two concentric cylinders, an inner and an outer, the outer cylinder being hollow through its longitudinal axis and the inner cylinder being movably and partially rotatably mountable therein, said outer cylinder having an opening in its wall and said inner cylinder having a vane projectable through said opening, said vane when extending through said opening intermediate the walls thereof substantially restoring the outer cylinder''s diameter and when extending through said opening and rotated against one of the walls of said opening reducing the outer cylinder''s diameter at said opening.
