To all whom t may lconcern Be it known that l, ROBERT M. Bruns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention ,rela-tes to a garter which is essentially adapted for securing a stocking by means of a clasp connected t-o an elastic leg encircling band.

An object of the invention is -to provide the ban-d with non-corrodible members preferably consisting of celluloid so that moisture cannot deteriorate or rust the members and thus soil the garments. o

Another object `of the invention is to provide the vclasp with longitudinal slots, One being behind the other, `and Ia stud or button slidingly mounted in the slots to yeng-age the stocking.

Another obj ect of the invention is to shape the clasp from a singl-e sheet of material and to provide it with a lateral lug for adjustably at-taching` oneend of the elastic band.

The invention is also designed to include means for removing the elastic band from the clasp when it becomes worn or useless and substituting another merely by attaching one end of the band to the lateral lug and mounting a slotted hook engaging member to its other end.

The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompany drawing in which Figure l represents a front elevation of a garter embodying this invention.

In the drawing the numeral 9 designates a band which is formed of elastic webbing and adapted to encircle the leg of a person when the garter is in use. A clasp consisting of a rear member or frame 10 provided with a longitudinal key slot l1 and having Specification of Letters Patent.

a front tongue member l2 with la key slot 13 is attached to one end of the band. The means for attaching the fband to the clasp includes a lateral lug 11i projecting at an angle from the back .and having a pair of slots t5 with an intermediate slot 116 provided with a serrated edge i7 to engage :the band. rlhe band is passed through the slots and llooped about the bars formed between the slots with the end extending between the tongue and the back of the clasp :as indicated in Figures 1 and 7, The serra-tions bite int-o the body of the band, while the end portion is held taut or `clamped and hidden between the two members. The band can be lengthened or shortened circumferentially while it is about the leg merely by moving the end from between the two Vmem-bers and disengaging the body of the band from the serrations thus permitting it to be drawn through the slots.

Opposite to the lug on the baok member is located a hook 18 for engagement with a slotted member i9 best seen in Figure l. The lug and the Ihook are each set at an obtuse angle to the body of the clasp so as to give the elastic a snug fit about the leg and wrinkling is eliminated. The slotted member is secured to the end of the band by clamping the band between serrated jaws 20. The slotted member is formed of a sheet of celluloid doubled while hot and the teeth are cut in the turned edges of the jaws after it is shaped as shown. When it is desired to renew the band t-he slotted member can be removed by springing the jaws apart and the member used to mount another band.

The device for securing a stocking to the clasp comprehends a button or stud having a head 2l with a stem 22 and a back 23 formed of Celluloid. A portion of the stem is of larger diameter forming a shoulder and between it and the inner surface of the head is clamped a disk of rubber 24 to engage the fabric.

It will be seen that when the button is in place it can be slid up or down within the limits of the slots. The rear slot is longer than the slot in the tongue so that the button when in register with the key hole in the rear slot can be removed or inserted. The clasp has sufficient resiliency to move the tongue away from the back when the button is moved up out of register with the key hole in the tongue slot. When the head of the button is in line with the key hole or enlarged part of the slot in the tongue it permits the fabric to be passed between the tongue and back and about the head of the button. In order to fast-en the fabric the tongue is pressed toward the back bringing the head of the button with the fabric outside of the keyhole, and the button can f then be slid downward as shown in Fig. 3, to clamp the portions of the fabric adjacent the head between the tongue and its slot.

' As indicated in Figure l the blank for forming the clasp is preferably composed of 1 a sheet of flat celluloid which can be moulded into .the shape shown in Figure l by doubling it longitudinally while it is hot or in a semiplastie state. The slots are cut in the body of the sheet before it is doubled and the teeth in the edgeof the slot in the lug are filed or cut as shown after the sheet cools.

A garter comprising clasp having back and front members7 keyhole slots formed in thev members, a button slidingly arranged in the slots, a lateral slotted lug projecting at an angle from the back to adjustably attach one end of an elastic band, and ahook located opposite to the lug for i y engagement with another end of the band.

A vgarter comprising a clasp having back and front members, keyhole slots formed in the members, one being longer than the other, abutton slidingly arranged in the slots, a lateral slotted lug projecting at an angle from the back to adjustably attach one end of an elastic band, a hook located a't an angle opposite to the lug, and a slotted member detachably connected to the other end of the band for engagement with the hook.

A garter comprising a clasp having back and front members, key `hole slots formed in the members, one being behind the other7 a button slidingly arranged in the slots, a lateral slotted lug projectingclasp for garters having a pair of longitudi-y nal key hole slots, one being above the other, a lateral slotted lug extending at an angle from the body of the blank, and a lateral projection opposite to vthe lug. n
