CONVERTIBLE GAR'IER AND HOLDING DEVICE Application filed July 7, 1928.

This invention is primarily a convertible garter, adapted to be used in one adjustment for supporting socks and in another adjustment for holding stockings in place, but

embodies also a holding device capable of other uses. An example of convertible garter is shown in my Patent 1,588,625 granted June 15, 1926. The special utility and object of the present invention is to enable a man to change from socks, for example to golf stockings, without requiring separate garters for the two uses. Further objects are to improve the construction, efficiency and comfort of garters of the class referred to, with pivoting movements between the several components, thus affording self conformation to the wearer and maximum comfort. Other and further objects and advantages will be explained in the following description of an illustrative embodiment or will be apparent to those skilled in the sub- 'ect. 1 To the attainment of such objects and advantages the present invention consists in the novel garter and the novel features of arrangement, combination, construction and operation herein illustrated or described.

As shown in Fig. 1 the circular band 10 is of the wide type, preferably elastic, and

attachable through the use of a stud and socket fastening, which may be of various forms. Thus near one end of the band 10 is shown a recessed clasp plate 11 formed with a socket or recess 12, the wide elastic band extending through the plate 11, in a manner, disclosed and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 266,314, filed March 31, 1928, the band extend ng beyond the plate in the form of a free end 13. attached to it a member 15, preferably com posed of leather, which may be termed a pad, and is stitched to the band by appropriate stitching, as shown.

The stud member 16 of the detachable fastening is shown as extending through a suitable aperture in the pad 15, and adapted to be engaged by the tapered recess or socket 12 in the clasp plate 11.

In the convertible type of garter it is necessary to provide detachable connections between the two ends of the band 10 which encircles the leg and the top end of the strap which extends between the band and the sock. In accordance with the illustrated embodiment of this invention the stud and socket already described constitute on detachable connecting means, the other consisting of a hanger 17 mounted on the strap and with which hanger the band is readily connectible and disconnectible. The arrangement could be reversed.

The hanger 17 is of a special character adapted to cooperate with the headed stud 16. Thus the narrow end 18 of the hanger is formed with a longitudinal slot or recess as wide as the head of the stud so that the stud can be inserted in the slot adjacent to its top end. In connection with this arrangement there is shown an elastic member or buffer 19 mounted in the slot in a manner to engage yieldingly with the slot. The buffer 19 may consist of a bar or block ofrubber secured or clamped by a cross strip or loop 20 in a position so near to the end of the slot as to accommodate the stud shank, but not its head. The strip may consist of metal crimped into place as shown in Fig. 41 so as to hold tightly the buffer in its proper position. The action in inserting or removing the stud is well shown in Fig. 3 where the hanger 17 is being forced into engagement with the stud, the stud deflecting the upper end of the buffer 19 which yields to permitthe engagement until, when the stud reaches the dotted line position, the buffer returns to normal and so holds the parts yieldingly connected.

clamp may be adjusted within limits, as shown, being held frictionall'y in their set position. This permits the taking up of wear in case the rubber butler should wear down. Preferably the stud 16 is mounted on one 76 end of the garter band 10 while the hanger 17 has attached to its wide end 21 a fabric strap 22 which may extend from the hanger downwardly to the sock. The lower end of the strap is provided with a button 23 engage- 8o able by a loop 2% to hold the sock, this loop being suspended from a doubled portion or strip constituting part of the strap.

\Vhen the hanger 17 is applied to the stud 16 the garter is readily adapted to the sus- 85 taining of socks, whereas by detaching the hanger from the stud the garter is readily available for sustaining golf stockings or the like. \Vhen changing; from SOCli to golf 25 stockings the wearer not required to de 90 tach the garters from the socks but merely to disengage the sock straps and hangers from the studs. Thus the straps are not likely to become lost. while the wide elastic hand garter is highly suitable for sustaining 95 golf or other stockings.

What is claimed is: 1. A convertible garter comprising a band for encircling the leg, a connecting strap to extend between the band and a sock, and means detachably connecting the strap and no one end of the band, connprising a headed stud on one of them and a hanger on the other, the hanger having a slot of width to receive the stud head and an elastic member or bulier mounted in the slot. n5

2. A convertible garter comprising a band for encircling the leg, a connecting strap to extend between the band and a sock, a headed stud on one band end, means detachably connecting the other band end thereto, and a hanger on :itllt'l strap with which said stud is readily connectible and disconnectible, con sisting of a recessed piece with elastic member in its recess to'engage yiellingly the said stud.
