I UNITED sfmresgT` SAMUEL C. Hermann, or'nmconn, nnianesira,
STORAGE FILE;
Specification of Letters Patent. I V Patntefi July 25, 1922.
Application filed February 26, 1921. Serial No. 447,914.
To all whom it'may come/mt:
Be it known that I, ,SAMUEL C. HUrrMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Impr'ovements in Storage Files, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved storage'file particularly designed for filing away records, papers, or the like, and has as one of its principal objects to provide a storage file which will be dust-proof, strong and durable.
A further object of the invention is to provide' a storage file which may be readily Set up or collapsed and wherein .gluing or pasting in conjunction with the file will be eliminated.
And the invention has a still further object to provide a storage file which will be inexpensive and light in weight. V
Other and incidentalobjects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawing: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved storage file closed,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the Storage file open, p
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section showing the manner in which the metal binding clips of the file are adapted to hold the file closed,
Fig. 4 is aV fragmentary section showing a slightly modified form of binding clip, and
Fig. 5 is a detail section of the modified clip.
In carrying the invention into effect I employ a box which may be formed of Strawboard, cardboard, or other approved material. This box includes a box body comprisingside walls 10 and end walls 1.1. Extending from the Side walls are inte-l gral top and bottom side flaps 12 and 13 and extending from the end walls are integral top and bottom end flaps 14 and 15. The flaps 12 and 13 are of equal width and extend from end to end of the side walls, the top flaps, as well as the bottom flaps, being adapted to meet medially of the box. Similarly, the flaps 1/1 and 15 are of equal width and extend from endto end of theV Aend walls. As will be perceived,-when all of the flaps are opened, as Suggested in Figure 2, the side and end walls'may be moved into abutting relation and the'box thus collapsed. The box may, aocordingly,.be packed or Shipped flat. Formed in the upper and lower margins/ of the end walls medially thereof are slots which, for convenience, havebeen indicated at 16 and 17 respectively. The box may, of course, be varied in shape and proportions as desired..
In conjunction with. the box, 'I employ substantially U-shaped binding clips 18. These binding clips are constructed of suitable resilient Sheet metal and are preferably provided with substantially semi-circular parallel side wings.l In setting up the box, the bottom end flaps 15 are first turned inwardly between the side walls 10 when the bottom side flaps 13 are folded inwardly to overlie the end flaps.l A pair of the clips '18 are then, as shown in Figure 3, employed for holding the several bottom flaps closed. In applying these clips, one wing of each thereof is projected through one of the slots 17 respectively to confront the inner sides of the flaps 15 so that the other wings of said clips will thus be disposed to overlie the ends of the flaps 13 at the joint therebetween. Accordingly, these clips will clamp the bottom flaps of the box firmly closed. As will be seen, the box will then be adapted to receive papers, records or the like, which may be readily arranged within the box at the open upper side thereof. To close the box, the flaps 111 are first folded inwardly when the flaps 12 are then arranged to overlie the former flaps. Another pair of the clips 18 is then engaged with the end walls of the box through the slots 16 for clamping the top flaps tightly closed. A dust-proof container is thus provided while, as will now be appreciated, access to the papers within the box may, by simply removing the top pair of the clips 18, be readilyhad at any time.
In Figures 4 and 5 of thel drawing, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of clip 19. The clip of this modification is, like the preferred form of clip, of Substantial U-shape and ,is formed of suitable resilient sheet metal. However, the semi-circular wings of the clip are each provided with a pair of Securing prongs or Spurs 20 Struck inwardly from said wings. The pointed ends of these spurs are directed toward the bightof the clip so that when the clip is applied, as shown in Figure 4:, the Spurs Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is: k
l. A storage file including a box body having a olosure flap and provided in awaliy thereof With a slot, and a substantially U- shaped ehp having one Wing thereof extendw ing through Said slot and the other Wing thereof overlying said tiap Securing .the
'[iap closedythe clip being freely removable bodily to release said flap.
2. A storage file'ineluding a box body having elosurefiaps, and a* clip removably fitting through a Wall of the box body overlying said fiaps seeuring the flaps closed and provided With spurs coacting With the flaps holding the clip against aceidental dis- V placement.
