Application led February 9, 1922. Serial No. 535,231.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that CHARLES D. SAPPEN- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Cartons, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes or cartons, the primary object of which is to provide a carton of such construction as to be readily stamped from a sheet of heavy paper, cardboard or the like, and which may with facility be set up or folded into proper form wholly by the use of machinery and not requiring manual effort in such operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carton blank of such construction that the carton, when properly folded or set up, will have its several sides securely sealed in a substantially air and dust-proof manner, thus enabling the carton to be used as a storage container for powder or fine granular materials and effectively prevent the same sifting therefrom.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the improved carton is to be constructed,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the blank partly in set up position,
Figure 3 is an edge view of the device in the position shown in Figure 2,
Figure 4 is an edge View of the box in complete folded position, the top flaps thereof being extended to the position they will assume prior to the box being finally sealed,
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view through the device as shown in Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a similar sectional View taken at right angles to the plane upon which Figure 5 is taken, and
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional View taken through the folded or set up box.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the blank as it will appear after having been properly cut and ready forthe folding operations. This blank passes into the folding machine, and the bottom section or portion thereof, indicated at 8, is positioned beneath a plunger or former.
When
the box is so positioned, the bottom flaps or tabs 9 are bent upwardly upon the lines 10, at right angles to the bottom. These flaps are held in this position while the entire blank is passed to the mechanism which next bends or folds the side portion 11 upwardly upon line 12 at right angles to the bottom, whereupon the end flaps or wings 13 of the side 11 are bent inwardly upon line 14 against the upstanding flaps 9 of the bottom. The lower extremity of each flap 13 is coated with an adhesive as indicated at 15, and this moistened adhesive fastens the flaps 13 tothe upstanding bottom flaps 9. The next operation causes the side 16 to be folded upwards upon line 17 and the iiaps 18 are folded inwardly upon lines 19, so that the said flaps 18, covered throughout their length and breadth with the adhesive indicated at 20, will lie snug upon the outer faces of flaps 13. The adhesive 20 secures the flap 18 throughout its length and breadth to the fiap 13, and the adhesive of these portions causes the ends of the box to be securely locked together in a substantially air and dust-proof manner. The side 11 carries an extension 21 which constitutes an inner top closure flap, and is of a length and breadth equal substantially to the length and breadth of the bottom section 8. The outer end of side 16 carries a similar flap indicated at 22, which constitutes an outer top closure flap, while the outer extremities of flaps 18 carry tabs 23 adapted to be folded inwardly upon lines 24E and to underlie the inner top closure Hap 21 carried by side 11. The size of tabs 23 is such that when folded inwardly upon their weakened lines 24 they will together entirely underlie the flap 21.
It will be noted that the flaps 9 at the extremities of the bottom 8 are of a length less than the breadth of the flaps 13 and 18. and have straight outer edges parallel with the fold lines 14 and at right angles to Ithe adjacent gummed edges of flaps 13 and 18, whereupon a rectangular recess or gap indicated at 25 is provided at each side of the blank, and in which the feed fingers of the box folding machine may be received to stably engage such edge and advance the blank throughout the several stages of the setting up or folding operation.
The fiaps constituting the top of the box are of such size as to interft with one another When the box is closed after having been filled, and these flaps may be easily' turned in and properly positioned and affixed to each other by an ordinary automatic sealing machine.
The construction is such, parts ll-l6, parts 13-18 and parts 8, 21, 22 being of substantially similar size or area, that the weight of the contents of the carton will be evenly distributed to the sides ll-16, and a great portion of this weight will also be assumed by the overlapped ends l3-l8, the latter constituting reinforcements for each other and being secured to the upstanding tabs or flaps 9 of the bottom.
In this manner it is apparent that a carton of extremely simple construction is provided, and one wherein the feeding or moving of the blank throughout the several stages of the folding or setting up operations may be carried out expeditiously and in a manner which will preclude jamming of the machine or impairment of the blanks or cartons.
While the above is a description of the invention in its preferred embodiment, it will be understood, of course, that various changes may be resorted to, if desired, without departing from the .spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
l. As a new and improved article of manufacture, a carton of the character described comprising an oblong rectangular bottom wall, reinforcing tabs bent upward from the end edges of the bottom wall, oblong rectangular side walls bent upward from the side edges of the bottom wall, oblong rectangular end wall forming flaps of similar size and formation bent inwardly at rightangles from the outer edges of the side walls, said flaps being devoid of lateral extensions and overlapped and secured to each other and to the reinforcing tabs so as to form double-ply end walls and a reinforcing triple-ply leak-proof joint at the juncture of the end and bottom walls, similar rectangular inner top closing flaps upon the upper edges of one pair of said end wall forming flaps foldable inwardly toward each other at right angles to the formed end walls, the upper edges of the other end wall forming flaps being devoid of flaps at their upper edges to permit said inner top closing flaps to fold over the same, and similar oblong rectangular outer closing flaps upon the upper edges of the side walls adapted to fold in lapping relation at right angles to and over upon the said inner top closing iiaps, thereby forming reversely lapping pairs of flaps adapted to be adhesively united to form a reinforcing three-ply leak-pr0of closure for the top of the box.
2. As a new and improved article of manufacture, a carton ofthe character described comprising a body formed of a bottom wall, two side walls joined at their lower edges to the bottom wall, upwardly bent reinforcing flaps at the opposite ends of the bottom wall, two end walls formed of flaps bent inwardly from the side edges of the side walls, the flaps of one side wall lying inside the flaps of the other side wall and between the same and the renforcing flaps, the said end wall flaps of the first-named side wall being gummed upon the inner faces of their lower edges only and secured thereby to the outer faces of the reinforcing flaps, and the said end wall flaps of the second-named side wall having their inner faces gummed throughout their length and breath and secured thereby to the outer faces of the said partially gummed end wall iiaps` top closure flaps upon the upper edge of one side wall and the fully gummed end wall sections carried thereby, and a top closure flap upon the upper edge only of the other side wall.
3. A carton of the character described comprising an oblong rectangular bottom wall, oblong rectangular side walls equal in length and breadth to each other and joined to and bent upwardly on fold lines parallel with each other and with the side edges of the bottom wall, oblong rectangular reinforcing tabs projecting from and bent upwardly on fold lines parallel with the end edges of the bottom wall and hav ing straight side edges alining with the side edges of the bottom wall and outer end edges parallel with the end edges of the bottom wall, oblong rectangular end wall forming flaps upon the side walls having their longitudinal edges parallel with the longitudinal edges of the side walls and their top and bottom transverse edges at right angles to the side edges of the side walls, the end wall forming flaps of one side wall being folded inwardly at right angles to said wall and secured by adhesive material at their lower edges to the tabs, and the end wall forming fiaps of the other side wall being folded inwardly at right angles to said wall and secured throughout by adhesive material to the outer faces of the first-named infolded end aps, all of said end wall forming iiaps being devoid of extensions from their outer longitudinal side edges, similar oblong rectangular inner top closing flaps upon the upper edges of the latter-named end wall forming flaps foldable inwardly at right angles to the formed end walls, the upper edges of the other end wall forming iiaps being devoid of flaps at their upper edges to permit said inner top` closing flaps to fold over the same, and similar oblong rectangular outer top closing flaps upon the upper edges of the side walls adapted to fold in lapping relation at right angles to and over the said inner top closing flaps, thereby forming right angularly arranged pairs of flaps adapted to be adhesively united to form a leak-proof closure for the top of the boX.
4f. A. one-piece cut-out blank for the manufacture of a carton of the character described, said blank having a central oblong rectangular bottom Wall section, coextensive oblong rectangular side Wall sections on opposite sides of said bottom Wall section and corresponding in Width to the length thereof, oblong rectangular end Wall forming flaps at the sides of the side Walls, oblong rectangular reinforcing tab sections at the ends of the bottom section having outer transverse edges parallel with the longitudinal edges of the end Wall forming llaps and extending outwardly a distance somewhat greater than one-half the Width of said end Wall forming flaps, all of said sections having their side edges and end edges straight and arranged at right angles to each other and having their `similar edges straight and parallel with each other and with lines of fold between said sections, the end flap sections of one side Wall section having their inner faces gumlned on transverse lines adjacent to their bottom edges only and the end flap sections of the other side Wall section having their inner faces gumrned throughout their length and breadth, similar inwardly foldable oblong rectangular top closure flaps upon the outer transverse edges of the side wall sections, and similar oblong rectangular top closure aps upon the outer transverse edges of the fully gummed side wall section only, the outer transverse edges of the partially gummed end Wall forming sections of the other side Wall section being free from such aps.
