INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
T 0 all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. SNADECKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal- Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines and more particularly has reference to the arrangement and positioning of the spark plugs with reference to the engine cylinders.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated in Fig. 1 diagrammatically the front elevation of a suitable form of internal combustion engine showing an embodiment of my invention the same being what is well known as the V-type, partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective View upon an enlarged scale of a cylinder head such as I prefer to employ, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3'-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a perspective view of the cylinder head with parts of the cover removed, taken from a point in front of and somewhat above the inlet valve.
The cylinder heads are preferably provided with double exhaust and single inlet and this cylinder head is preferably provided with suitable means at either side of the inlet preferably as indicated at 4: for receiving a spark plug such as 5. The whole floor through which the spark plug projects is preferably formed at an angle to the cylinder as shown so that when the cylinders are in place as shown in Fig. 1 the axis of the plug is substantially vertical and conveniently accessi- Specification of Letters Patent.

ble. I prefer to employ a plug at each side of the gas inlet 6 of each cylinder and by this arrangement I not only provide additional ignition but so locate it practically in the path of the incoming gas and clear of the exhaust that ignition is practically insured and very much better operation is ob- ,tained. In the particular type of cylinder head shown in Fig. 2 I also prefer to provide cut-away portion '7 of the head which insures ample clearance for getting at the plug and for conveniently introducing and removing the same.
Of course it will be understood that any desirable type of plug may be used and that various modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
In combination with the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, two exhaust outlets at one side and a gas inlet opposite thereto, a spark plug at each side of said inlet, said spark plugs passing through said cylinder head at such an angle that when said cylinders are mounted in a V-type engine said spark plugs are substantially vertical, a clearance through said cylinder head around said spark plug, said cylinder head providing water-jacketing means around said outlets and detachably secured to said cylinder.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
IVILLIAM J. SNADECKI. lVitnesses ANNA F. DUFFY, THOMAS A. HILL.
