Abstract
PURPOSE: To accomplish complete combustion of lean mixture, by providing a plurality of subsidiary combustion chambers for combusting rich mixture, disposing an ignition plug in each of these subsidiary combustion chambers, and locating a fuel supply source at a portion of intake pipe spaced from the intake valve through a proper distance.
CONSTITUTION: A fuel supply (carburetor, injection valve or the like used commonly) is disposed in intake pipe 5 which is communicated via intake valve 7 to main combustion chamber 4 formed upwardly of piston 3 in cylinder 1. In addition to this fuel supply source, there is provided a fuel injection valve 14. Subsidiary combustion chamber-ignition plug units 8, 8' are serewed in cylinder head 2 such that their tops are located in the main combustion chamber 4. These units 8, 8' consist respectively of a semispherical subsidiary combustion chamber 9 communicated to main chamber 4 via one or more connecting ports 10 and an ignition plug 13 having center electrode 11 and earthing electrode 12 located in subsidiary chamber 9, and these two units 8, 8' are disposed on the opposite sides in respect of the axis of piston 3. Position of the fuel injection valve 14 is determined such that fuel is injected into subsidiary chamber 9 or near to the same when intake valve 7 is opened.
